Excavating the 2 strangest Egyptian tombs in history: after 4000 years, the paint is still like new

Both tombs are so well preserved that the drawings look like they were painted on recently.

Recently, archaeologists in Egypt announced that they have discovered two tombs that are considered the strangest ever. The strange thing is that although they date back thousands of years, the drawings and characters inside are so well preserved that they look like they were just painted on.

Specifically, one tomb was found in the Akhmim cemetery in the Sohag district of Upper Egypt. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the discovery of this tomb was also very coincidental, as it was all thanks to the arrest of a group of tomb robbers who were illegally transporting antiquities. The tomb is determined to date back 2,000 years from the Ptolemaic period, and is the resting place of a respected official named Tutu and his wife.

There are more than 50 animal mummies in this tomb.

The tomb has two chambers, two limestone sarcophagi, a well-preserved mummy, and elaborately painted walls. Around 50 animal mummies were also found, including swiftlets, falcons, eagles, dogs, cats, and… shrews.

“This is one of the largest and most exciting discoveries ever made in the region,” said Mostafa Waziri of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The other tomb found in the Saqqara necropolis dates back even further – to the time of pharaoh Djedkare Isesi 4,000 years ago. It belonged to a high-ranking official named Khuwy, who appears to have had a close relationship with pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. The entrance to the tomb is modeled after a pyramid, while the color of the walls inside shows royal authority.

Experts believe that this tomb may reveal some secret information about the reign of pharaoh Djedkare Isesi – who ruled Egypt for 40 years, of which there are very few documents.

Inside Khuwy’s tomb

According to CNN, the tomb is designed in an L-shape, with a small corridor, a small chamber connected to a main shaft. Wall paintings inside depict Khuwy sitting at a table.

The tomb also contained Khuwy’s mummy, along with a few jars containing his organs. Unfortunately, these jars were broken.

It is known that experts in Egypt have been struggling to announce new archaeological discoveries in the past few months, in order to improve the number of tourists who are decreasing. At the end of 2018, the Ministry of Antiquities announced two large tombs dating back 3,500 – 4,400 years, belonging to a priest named Wahtye.

At present, experts believe that Tutu’s tomb will attract the attention of the whole world, because they are so well preserved against the effects of time.
