Ron Rivera to get first crack at Jets head coaching interview

The Jets have their first interview lined up for their head coaching vacancy.

Ron Rivera is scheduled to interview for the job this week, NFL Network reported Monday morning, ahead of the team’s season finale against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Rivera, 62, was fired as Commanders coach at the end of last season after Washington finished 4-13 in his fourth season with the team.

He was 26-40-1 during his four seasons, winning the NFC East in 2020 despite a 7-9 record. Washington lost in the wild-card round in its only playoff appearance during Rivera’s tenure.

Rivera previously was the Panthers head coach for nine seasons and led them to a Super Bowl 50 appearance after they went 15-1 during the regular season.

Carolina was 76-63-1 during Rivera’s nine seasons and 3-4 in playoff games. He won Coach of the Year honors in 2013 and ’15.

As far as other potential candidates, former Jets coach Rex Ryan said on ESPN NY Radio Monday morning that he expects to interview for the job.

“I believe I will,” Ryan said when asked if he thinks he’ll get a chance to interview for the gig. “But no, I have not had any conversations with anybody within the organization, but I believe I will. Look, they’re not gonna bring anybody in I’m sure until after the season is done. This is the way Woody [Johnson] has always operated, and we’ll see what happens once the season is over.”

The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas during the season.

They then hired The 33rd Team, led by their former GM Mike Tannenbaum, to help them with their coach and GM searches.

The Jets have interviewed Thomas Dimitroff, Jon Robinson and Jim Nagy for their GM job, and Louis Riddick was expected to get an interview.
