This girl lived in ancient South America, during the Inca civilization. The mummy surprised researchers because it was still intact and in fact, this girl was still a virgin.
The unfortunate Inca girl was chosen at the age of 12 to be a sacrifice to the gods. She had to live far away from her parents, preparing for a long journey, with great responsibility.
All the clothes and food of the girl were carefully selected. In the last few weeks of her life, the girl was given alcoholic drinks and hallucinogenic drugs to get used to it. When the time came to sacrifice the gods, the girl drank a lot of wine and kept cocaine in her mouth. so that she could pᴀss away peacefully.
The mummy was found intact.
The girl was placed in an ice tomb with her legs crossed, her head bowed forward, wearing fur clothes and a feathered hat. Just like that, the girl was left to die of cold, in the terrifying child sacrifice ritual of the Incas.
More than 500 years later, in 1999, scientists found the mummy of the young girl and two other children, aged 4-5, near the Llullaillaco volcano in Argentina. This is considered the best place to preserve mummies because of the cold all year round.
Such gruesome sacrificial rituals were maintained for a long time, until the Spanish appeared in South America in the 16th century.
Dr. Andrew Wilson from the University of Bradford, who led the research, said: “Thanks to the intact mummy, we can reveal the life of this girl.”
According to scientists, the girl was accustomed to a state of unconsciousness, thanks to the use of cocaine leaves for a whole year, when she was chosen to be sacrificed.
Researchers have partly outlined the fate of the unfortunate Inca girl.
The research team found that the girl pᴀssed away peacefully, without any violence or resistance. “The girl met an end she probably didn’t feel. The cold, the alтιтude, the lack of oxygen sent her into an eternal sleep,” said researcher Emma Brown.
Researchers are not sure what the purpose of the sacrifice was. It could have been to pray for a good harvest, or it could have been to use living people to instill fear and control within the civilization.
The person sacrificed had to be a virgin, according to Brown. “The Incas believed that for the sacrifice to be successful, the candidate had to be young and virginal.”
More than 500 years later, the team cannot tell whether the girl felt proud of her noble mission, or whether she had to accept the tragic end. Researchers hope that the girl truly felt nothing in her final moments as she was sacrificed.
