3,000 years ago, in what is now Iran, a type of underground aqueduct called a Qanat was designed to transport water over long distances to farms and villages that could not survive without water in the H๏τ, dry climate.

These holes are called Qanat — an ancient Persian system of water supply.  There was an underground canal that people used to drink water from or  would get water for their plants.
