In the same family ownership for almost 150 years, the Estate has undergone a number of transformations.
Ardverikie, now extends to some 38,000 acres.
As is described in the Estate history, land has been sold over the years, either to fund development or to pay taxes and duties. The Estate now reflects the era in which we live, and is operated as a limited family company, with 20 shareholders, all of whom are family members, led by a board of 5 directors, with an external chairman.
Managed from the Estate Office, under the guidance of the family, the major activities on the Estate are:
Hydro electricity generation
The Estate has a 1Mw turbine, which was installed in 1987 and forms the basis of the Estate’s business. Electricity not used on the Estate is sold to the National grid and helps fund the Estate’s activities. Employing 12 members of staff, the Estate is a large employer in terms of the local economy.
Tourism
Sharing the beauty of the Estate with others gives the owning family great pleasure. We are fortunate to have six holiday cottage on the Estate available all year round and sleeping between 3 and 13 people. All properties are comfortably appointed with free Wi-Fi. Please visit the holiday cottage pages or call the Estate Office for details.
Forestry
With some 5,000 acres of commercial forestry under management, the Directors have sought to modernise the forest inventory with new species of trees enabling shorter rotations, but without compromising on the quality of the timber produced or the natural beauty of the environmental. There has been extensive investment in forest infrastructure also, enabling the extraction of felled timber to the main artery route, the A86 and on to market.
Deer Management
The Estate manages a substantial herd of wild red deer, which range across the Estate. We are leading members of Deer Management groups at both local and national level. Stalking takes place within the season, and the venison generated enters the food chain. Roe and Sika Deer live on the Estate in smaller quanтιтies.
Filming
Over the years, Ardverikie has been used as a source of locations for numerous film and television productions as well as fashion and advertising stills shoots.
