The mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Trabzon, Murat Zorluoglu, as reported by Anadolu, expressed confidence that the process of inclusion of Sumela Monastery in Pontus on UNESCO’s World Heritage List will be successful as reported by pontosnews.gr.
Turkish authorities announced their intention to prepare the documents that were to be included in the application file before the restoration works were completed, which are now at the very last phase.
The goal, as the mayor stated, is for Sumela Monastery to be included on the list in the coming years. It is noteworthy that it is part of the wider tourism development plan in the region. Besides, the well-known monastery is the most visited tourist site in Trabzon.
He also announced that the cable car, which has two lines, has been completed. One crosses the valley and reaches a point far from Sumela Monastery, where tourists will be able to enjoy a panoramic view. The second line will bring visitors closer to the monument.
