It’s an exciting day for soap fans after EastEnders finally revealed the trailer for their highly-anticipated Christmas episode on Wednesday – and it seems like Cindy Beale’s big secret is about to come to light.

The BBC soap revealed the short teaser in dramatic fashion, alongside the caption: ‘Time’s up for Cindy… This Christmas on #EastEnders.’

Viewers have been on the edges of their seats for months as they watched Cindy’s (Michelle Collins) ongoing affair with her former step-son Junior Knight (Micah Balfour).

The explosive trailer hints that the huge reveal will be finally happening after a plot involving blackmail, as Anna opens a tiny present on Christmas day – a USB stick reading: ‘Play me! Festive fun for all’.

Fans will remember that Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier) accidentally recorded a lengthy conversation between Cindy and David Wicks (Michael French), where she discussed her love for George and fling with Junior.

Cindy is shocked to discover that the incriminating recording in which she reveals her affair with Junior has fallen into the wrong hands.

Finding herself blackmailed, she takes action, hoping that she has done enough to silence her tormentor and keep her cheating secret.

However, Christmas Eve sees her receive another piece of damning information.

Wanting all his family around him, George invites the Beales to join the Knights for Christmas dinner at the Vic. 

However, little does he know the secrets and lies that lie beneath the seemingly happy celebration as the guests arrive.

Soon, George and Ian make toasts, but the happy scene doesn’t last for long.

As Christmas Day plays out, the Square becomes a war zone as the shocking truth about Cindy’s affair is revealed in spectacular fashion in The Vic.

Soon, accusations are flying on all sides as the two families come to terms with the shocking revelation.

With Suki having reneged on her deal never to remarry, she knows he might be out for revenge, and with Nish a dying man, there could be no limit to how far he will go to destroy Suki’s happiness.

The gritty Christmas episode will reportedly also see a major character battle with their mental health.

One of the soap’s longest-appearing stars, Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, 65, will be trying to cope with depression and suicidal thoughts in the festive installment of the BBC show.

Phil’s struggling mental health comes after his life has fallen apart after being abandoned by his family.

The character’s son Ben is in a prison in the US while his daughter Louise lives in Portugal and his former wife Kat Slater has moved on and is loved up with Alfie Moon.

As the festive period goes on, viewers will see Phil deteriorate as he tries to cope with thoughts of ending his own life according to The Sun.

And Phil’s difficult time is just the latest in a long list of harrowing Christmas festive plots in Walford.

The timing of Phil’s struggles coincides with the soap’s 40th anniversary.

EastEnders will air in two parts on Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer with one instalment at 7:30pm and a second at 10:35pm.
