Demi Moore, 62, reveals she thought her time in Hollywood was ‘complete’ right before she got the script for The Substance: ‘I was almost ready to step away’

Demi Moore has revealed she thought her time in the film business was over before she filmed The Substance.

The actress, 62, has been nominated for Best Female Actor at the Golden Globes for her role in the body horror flick, which many critics have called one of the best performances of her career.

In the film, she plays an ageing actress who obtains a black market drug to create a younger version of herself in a bid to remain relevant – with disastrous consequences.

The Ghost star was among the honourees at the SFFILM Awards in San Francisco, California where she received the Maria Manetti Shrem Award for Acting.

Taking to the stage to accept her award, Demi told the audience she wasn’t sure if she had much of a future in the entertainment business before her latest film.

She said: ‘I’ve had a very long career, but I haven’t really ever been part of the conversations that allowed me to be part of [awards shows] and to really receive the love and celebration of my work. I’m really just so humbled.

‘At the beginning of 2022, I had a moment where I was at an event and I felt I didn’t belong. I didn’t know why I was there. I wanted to be invisible and I couldn’t figure out how to get out.

‘And I thought, ‘You know what? Maybe my time doing this is complete. Maybe I’ve done everything I was supposed to do.’ … Two weeks later, the script for ‘The Substance’ came across my desk.’

Demi finished her speech by saying she was ‘almost ready to step away’ from the industry and is now so grateful she didn’t.

Also honoureed that evening were Dune: Part Two filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Saturday Night director Jason Reitman and The Piano Lesson filmmaker Malcolm Washington – who is the son of Denzel Washington.

Demi cut a glamorous figure on the red carpet in a figure-hugging black dress and a matching black denim jacket.

Other stars making a splash on the red carpet for the film organisation, which puts on the San Francisco International Film Festival, included Dune’s Austin Butler, Gladiator II actress Connie Nielsen and Saturday Night’s Gabrielle LaBelle.

Demi dressed down her look with a cropped black waxed denim jacket with an attached belt.

She complemented the casual yet stylish jacket with a similarly low-key silver chain around her neck.
