One of the main stories way back in Jets training camp was how second-year edge rusher Will McDonald would fare this season.
McDonald entered 2024 with plenty of questions about whether the Jets made a mistake taking him No. 15 overall in 2023.
McDonald now has answered those questions.
The 25-year-old has 10 sacks this season after notching two against the Seahawks last week.
He is not going to reach his stated goal of 20 sacks this season, but McDonald has shown he should be part of the Jets’ future once a new general manager and head coach are hired.
“It’s another guy that’s just another bright spot in a season with not as many bright spots as you’d like,” Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “And it’s absolutely a byproduct of his process. This is a guy that gained nearly 20 pounds this offseason and kept his weight on all year long. Not a naturally big guy, guy’s got to work at it, and he has.
“Practice habits have become elite, all of it, and for all of that to be demonstrated in the sack production he’s had, you feel good about stuff like that, but so excited about Will.”
McDonald had three sacks in limited playing time as a rookie, which only amplified questions about whether the Jets were wise selecting him out of Iowa State in the first round.
The Jets showed they had their own questions about McDonald with how much he played in the preseason.
He was often the only defensive starter in preseason games.
The path opened up for McDonald, though, with the Jets letting Bryce Huff walk in free agency and then Haason Reddick holding out deep into the season.

The Jets’ edge depth was further tested when Jermaine Johnson suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2.
McDonald has made the most of his opportunity. While he’s not going to break Mark Gastineau’s team record of 22 sacks, he can become the first Jet to have 13 sacks since John Abraham did it in 2001 if he can get three sacks in the final five games.
The Jets ruled out RB Breece Hall (knee) for Sunday’s game.
Hall initially was listed as doubtful by the Jets on Friday, but they downgraded him to out Saturday.
Hall suffered a knee injury three weeks ago against the Colts and was able to play last week against the Seahawks but did not practice all week.
Rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis will get the bulk of the carries with Hall out.
Rookie CB Qwan’tez Stiggers (illness) was also ruled out.
DT Solomon Thomas was fined $16,883 for a horse-collar tackle against the Seahawks.
The Jets officially activated WR Allen Lazard and OL Wes Schweitzer off injured reserve for Sunday’s game.
They elevated CB Kendall Sheffield.
They placed LB C.J. Mosley on injured reserve officially and released C Connor McGovern.
