The ‘ugly’ scenes that led to Matt Eberflus’ firing by the Chicago Bears revealed

The final hours of Matt Eberflus’ reign in Chicago reportedly turned ‘ugly’ as emotions boiled over in the locker room following the team’s Thanksgiving loss to the Lions.

The Bears fell to a 23-20 loss against Detroit after a last-play mishap that saw Caleb Williams throw downfield as the play clock hit zero – despite Chicago still having a timeout to use.

It was the latest in a number of disappointments this season – and it proved the final straw for the Bears hierarchy, who fired Eberflus earlier this week.

He became the first ever Bears head coach to be fired mid-season and now details have begun to emerge about Eberflus’ downfall.

According to the Athletic, the coach urged the team to ‘stick together’ in a post-game speech to his players.

But, instead, the locker room was described as ‘ugly’ and ‘frustrated’ with a ‘lot of yelling’ as tempers frayed over more ‘bad time-management and decision-making.’

Team captain Jaylon Johnson is said to have gone ‘crazy’, with another player telling the Athletic that the cornerback was ’emotional and p****d but rightfully so’.

It’s said that Johnson’s fury was primarily aimed in Eberflus’ direction and he was not the only person to voice their annoyance.

A number of figures were reportedly ‘furious’, with one staff member branding their frustration ‘an accumulation of this season’.

According to the Athletic, emotions ran so high that the head coach left the locker room immediately after the outbursts.

Eberflus was fired with the Bears sitting bottom of the NFC North with a 4-8 record. Chicago has lost all of its past six games.

But reports claim that frustrations with the coaching staff had been ‘bubbling’ since the offseason, when new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron began to alter Chicago’s run game.

Some team leaders, it’s said, felt Waldron’s system was not helping the development of rookie QB Williams.

‘Where they messed up was with Shane and making him the coordinator to begin with,’ one player told The Athletic.

The Bears fired Waldron on November 12 – he was the first Bears’ offensive coordinator fired during the season, too
