Places to visit within Lazio region

Since we probably won’t be able to go out of our region for a while, we have decided to suggest you some tips of where you can go within the Lazio region. It is important to stay positive and be grateful for all that our region has to offer! With all the suggested locations you will be able to enjoy this incredible time of the year without even having to travel far from home!

1. Ostia

This beautiful place is only 30 minutes by car from Rome in the banks of the Tyrrhenian Sea. You will be able to go to the beach, enjoy the sun and taste the incredible seafood even if we won’t be allowed to go out of our regions. This location is not so touristy therefore,  it is also a way to escape from the city and from traffic. On the other hand, if you are not a sea lover, you will be able to enjoy Ostia Antica, full of cultural landmarks, ruins, and archeological sites.

2. Monte Livata 

Are you craving for mountains but are stuck in Rome? Within only 80 km you will be able to realize your dream. Especially at this time of the year, going to the mountains is the perfect solution since you will be able to escape from H๏τ temperatures and it will always be at least 10 ° C less than Rome. Take in mind this place also during winter season wherewith not even an hour of car you will be able to go skiing.

3. Villa Gregoriana 

If you can’t wait to take a walk around nature and history, this is the place to visit! Villa Gregoriana is one of the most known and stunning parks in all Europe and it was created by Pope XVI. It is located in Tivoli and it will take you approximately 30 minutes by car from Rome. You will have the possibility to walk around an astonishing cascade called the Great Waterfall and plenty of paths will take you to the beautiful caves of Neptune.

4. Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, Bracciano

Another incredible place to visit around the Lazio region is Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the largest medieval castles in Italy. You will be able to have a look where the lords back at the time used to live in. Many important and exclusive events usually take place here. It is located near to lake Bracciano and you can also reach this incredible location within an hour either by car or with the Ostiense or Valle Aurelia station.

5. Viterbo

An incredible getaway within the Lazio region, in between Rome and Tuscany. It is mainly known for its medieval architecture, its incredible museums, the main Cathedral and various iconic buildings.  On the other hand, if you are looking forward to having a relaxing weekend, this is also the perfect place to visit! Viterbo offers incredible spas such as the ‘Terme dei Papi’. You can also go to the astonishing pool at Bagnaccio, right in the middle of the countryside. It is the ideal location to have a few days out of the city, especially after months of not being able to travel and explore incredible spots!

6. Civita di Bagnoregio

“The city that dies”: this is the bleak nicknames that have been given to Civita, a small fraction of the Municipality of Bagnoregio, in northern Lazio, on the border with Umbria, within the wonderful Valle dei Calanchi, in the province of Viterbo.

Despite these uninviting names, Civita di Bagnoregio is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and every year it is visited by hundreds of thousands of people who come from all over the world to admire its timeless appearance and the magical atmosphere that you can perceive it by walking through its narrow alleys.

7. Ponza 

Ponza is an incredible island of the Italian Pontine and the place where real Italians go to. There are an infinite number of places to visit such as; incredible restaurants, stunning beaches, coves and museums. It is especially known for its incredible crystalline water which will make your stay memorable. It is the perfect place to go to also if you are looking forward to having some fun thanks to its vibrant nightlife but also if you want to have a relaxing weekend and enjoy nature. In order to reach Ponza from Rome, you can easily go to the Anzio port in an hour by car or train and then get a ferry to reach the stunning island. The perfect timing to visit Ponza is from June till September as the temperature will be ideal to enjoy this small paradise within the Lazio region.

8. Circeo National Park  

If you are visiting the Coast of Lazio, Circeo is for sure a place you must visit.  It can be the perfect escape for those who love the mountains to those who prefer the sea. Numerous athletes exercise here during the year but also individuals who want to visit incredible archeological sites or simply enjoy nature. Circeo National Park also offers stunning views and landscapes that will make your stay memorable. Within a few hours of car or by train you can reach this extraordinary place that will be able to satisfy every kind of desire.

9. Castel Gandolfo 

You can reach this extraordinary place in only 40 minutes by train from Rome. Castel Gandolfo is a small and tranquil town within the Castelli Romani area. It is the perfect place for nature lovers thanks to its incredible green countryside and the volcanic waters of Lake Albano. Back at the times, this was the place where the emperors, popes and aristocats used to spend their summertime. The center of the town is very small but beautiful with amazing views on the lake and countryside. Numerous cafes and exclusive restaurants and cultural landmarks are located here such as the stunning Papal Palace. By walking through these small streets you will reach the breathtaking Lake Albano with incredible beach clubs and every sort of commercial activity. It is the perfect escape from the chaotic life in the city!

10. Gaeta and Formia 

Gaeta and Formia are two locations very close to each other. Therefore, since they are incredible places you should for sure visit both of them. They offer similar aspects such as; stunning beachers, breathtaking views, important cultural landmarks and very nice shops and restaurants. They are very easy to reach from Rome by train or by car within not even an hour. They are also the perfect places to visit not only during the summer period but also during the rest of the year as they are known not only for their crystalline water and their beaches but also for their small towns where you can visit incredible castles and museums.
