Miley Cyrus used to take her hair extensions extremely seriously.

Cyrus, 32, opened up about wearing 250 individual hair extensions while chatting with Harper’s Bazaar “The Good Buy” podcast during an upcoming episode, which will air on Friday, November 29. In a teaser for the episode shared via TikTok on Wednesday, November 27, Cyrus explained that she was in a fringe outfit era while rocking her long extensions — and eventually felt it was too much.

“I love fringe. I will always stand by fringe; I love fringe forever,” she explained. “But there was an era of mine where the fringe would go from under the bust down to the bottom of the boot, and it was wearing me. I also had 250 individual hair extensions, and so there was a lot of, like, down,” Cyrus said, gesturing to her ankles.

For the uninitiated, hair stylists usually recommend people get 75 to 200 individual strands installed in their head, depending on the desired thickness and length. Only someone with very thick, long, hair would need over 200 extensions.

“If it was under 250, my mom wasn’t having it,” Cyrus continued. “Tish [Cyrus] would say we need another row. Tish would be like, ‘Take another row up.’ We would have 250.”

Miley went on to explain that now hairstylists “don’t even” add that much hair to their client’s mane. “The kind of hair extensions that we had, they don’t even do these anymore.”

Although the singer didn’t share exactly when she was rocking 250 extensions, Us Weekly predicts it was back in 2010, during season 4 of Hannah Montana when she rocked extra thick, waist-length tresses. Throughout the season, her fellow castmates — including Jason Earles — would make quips at Miley’s strands. Fans via social media agreed with the timeline.

“I remember watching Hannah Montana as a child and seeing Miley come out with those extensions, LIFE CHANGING fr,” one wrote in Harper’s Bazaar’s comments section. “Her hair in the last season of Hannah Montana was iconic tho,” a second added. A third took inspiration from Miley’s hair, “I got extensions bc of her extensions lol.”

Now, Miley can be seen sporting a more maintainable amount of hair, which is cut to her bust and highlighted.
