Devil Tower still exists today in America. It is surrounded by many legends and mysteries.
Devil’s Tower is a monolithic rock formation or volcanic crag located in the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, on the Belle Fourche River, USA. The tower has a peak elevation of 1,558m above sea level, located 386m higher than the surrounding terrain.
This mysterious natural wonder was designated the first National Monument of the United States by the late US President Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906.
The spectacular landscape surrounding Devil’s Tower is composed primarily of sedimentary rocks. The oldest rocks found in the National Monument were formed during the Middle or Late Triᴀssic period, which is about 225 to 195 million years ago.
Devil’s Tower was first discovered in 1893 by William Rogers and Willard Ripley, two visitors who discovered this natural wonder.
They found a narrow, vertical crack from the ground to the top of the mountain. At that time, both of them used wooden planks to make stairs to go up. Until 1927, the wooden plank stairs were still in use. The remaining traces are still preserved to this day.
It is a thrilling tourist attraction because the Devil’s Tower is surrounded by many legendary and mysterious stories.
The old story tells that in the legend of the Kiowa and Sioux LakH๏τa Native American tribes, in the past, young girls went out and encountered a pack of giant bears. They chased the girls very closely. To escape the danger, the young girls climbed a rock, knelt down and prayed to the Supreme Being to save them.
Upon hearing the prayer, the Holy Father made the rock fly up from the ground so that the bears could not chase after it. Because the rock was so huge and so steep, the bears could only leave their claws on both sides of the rock and could not do anything. When the girls went to heaven, they turned into the Pleiades constellation. That is one of the legends describing the formation of the mysterious Devil’s Tower today.
Back to modern times, the Devil’s Tower was used by filmmakers as a setting for the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in 1977.
Another mystery surrounding this tower, told by many tourists and locals. They saw a magical light appear in the sky above the tower. Some people even said that they saw a light appear on the top of this tower. However, this has not been confirmed.
