Miley Cyrus’ mom Tish has opened up candidly about her marriage with ex Billy Ray Cyrus.

The 57-year-old marijuana entrepreneur  talked about her split  with the 63-year-old Achy Breaky Heart hitmaker – who paid tribute to daughter Miley amid their estrangement –  after 28 years of marriage.

She spoke candidly about their relationship on the Sibling Revelry With Kate Hudson And Oliver Hudson podcast released on Monday as she said: ‘I never wanted to be divorced.

‘[But] for us, you’re in the public eye and the world that we exist in is already so odd and at some times unstable. 

Then Tish revealed the mistake she made in trying to make the marriage work.

She explained: ‘I wanted to make it work, probably for a little too long, like, for my own mental health. There became a point that, like, I didn’t have a choice.’

Tish and Billy Ray officially divorced in April 2022 as they share daughters Miley, 32, and Noah, 24, and son Braison, 30.

Billy Ray also adopted  Tish’s daughter Brandi, 37, and son Trace, 35, from her previous marriage.

On the podcast she also admitted to knowing that her split was ‘tough on everyone’ in the family especially on her adult children.

Tish said: ‘My son Trace, for example… He was bummed. He was like, “I wish my mom and dad would never get… I wish that wouldn’t have happened.”

 ‘I was an only child and had the best upbringing and best parents and never went through anything like that. So I don’t really know how it affects you, but… it was definitely something that was probably hard on them, no matter how you do it.

‘And I think that we did it really well. I think I did really well, and I do think that I just wanted it to be the easiest as possible for everyone involved.’

Tish’s daughter Brandi – who she also co-hosts podcast Sorry We’re Cyrus with – also appeared on the podcast appearance with her mom as  she said she felt like their parents’ split didn’t hurt as much as they were adults at the time.

The two had previously filed for divorce in 2010 and 2013 but managed to reconcile both times.

Brandi explained: ‘In the prior filings, like, especially Noah, was so young, and that was definitely a big thing.

‘My mom really wanted the family to stay together for Noah. But then once Noah was an adult, I do feel like it was… It was not great, but also, we’re all old enough to understand it. We’re able to zoom out and see it for what it was.’

Tish has since moved on and married actor Dominic Purcell in an intimate Malibu ceremony in August 2023 with Miley as her maid of honor.

Daughter Noah and son Braison were notably absent from the nuptials, sparking speculation of a feud at the time.

In February, reports surfaced that Noah was dating Purcell when Tish ‘started pursuing him,’ and she ‘was aware’ he was with her daughter.

‘The turmoil between Noah and Tish goes far beyond [what people think],’ a source told Us Weekly. ‘Noah is very distraught over Tish stealing Dominic from her.’

Another source has since told DailyMail.com that Noah fabricated the story about dating Purcell. 

‘Noah never dated Dominic and they were not together,’ said the insider. ‘She is delusional to think otherwise and is trying to create a narrative that will paint her as a victim.’

But according to a source, that’s fine by her. ‘She settled for nothing just to be done with him and get away from the situation,’ the insider told DailyMail.com exclusively.

For the most part the divorce agreement sees each party walk away from the brief marriage with what they brought to it in the first place.

However, the terms of the divorce agreement show that Billy Ray has agreed to hand over any claims he has to credits or royalties on songs that the couple wrote or published together before and during their union.
