The Wicked director has hit back and offered one piece for advice for those going to see the film  – as some viewers have been complaining about sound issues. 

Jon M. Chu encouraged fans to take their audio experience into their own hands in a social media post on November 23 ahead of the film’s opening weekend.

Posting on X he penned: ‘Tell your movie theater to turn it up to a 7… 

‘I’ve gone to a couple screenings and they are more like a 6.4. If you want it the way it was intended 7 is the way.’ 

His comment refers to sound levels for the Dolby audio systems used in some cinemas. 

Dolby then responded to Chu’s post, writing underneath: ‘We’ve got you covered.’

Fans had been shocked by the sound in the film – which stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba – taking to X to vent their frustrations.

They penned: ‘Sound was quiet, tinny and the balance was all wrong. Ruined it for me.’,

‘Still thinking about the atrocity of wicked’s sound mixing, the biggest movie of the year with two the greatest voices we have right now and THATS how you chose to edit the sound.’,

‘There is something off on the sound mix on the Wicked OST…? Only me. Some vocals sound muffled and buried in the mix.’,

‘Went to Wicked last night and was…underwhelmed by the sound. It really did feel like what should have been some of the most triumphant moments were lacking because it was quiet.’,

‘my only complaint about wicked is it’s not loud enough.’,

‘Did the sound levels during Wicked feel off to anyone else? I’ve seen it in two different theaters with Dolby Atmos and again in IMAX. For all of them, the sound felt too quiet and lacking some punch. The entire soundscape felt kinda narrow or compressed, which shocked me.’

Ariana and Cynthia brought the magic to the big screen as Wicked: Part 1 pummeled rival Gladiator II for the win in a ‘Glicked’ matchup at the US Box Office.

The lavish adaptation of the Tony winning Broadway musical has received high praise from critics, including The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner, earning 90-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans gave the highly anticipate film, based on the Gregory Maguire novel a warm 97-percent score.

Set in the land of Oz, Wicked shares the backstory of Elphaba, played by Erivo, 37, known in The Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West, portraying her as someone who was an outcast because of her green skin.

Glinda the Good Witch, played by Grande, 31, is portrayed as Elphaba’s bully turned friend from their days as roommates at Shiz University.

The movie earned a record setting $114 million at the US box office, the most for any musical adaptation ever. 

It conjured up another $50.2 million internationally for a global take of $164,180,000, according to The Numbers. 

The last time a musical did this well in the lead-up to the US Thanksgiving holiday was  2019’s Frozen II. 

Gladiator II, the other newcomer earned less than half as much, but still pulled in a respectable $55.5 million it’s first weekend in theaters.

The action-adventure starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Oscar winner Denzel Washington, scored a tepid 71-percent from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences offering a more generous 84-percent approval rating.   

Gladiator II did much better internationally, earning $165.5 million for a first weekend total of $221 million globally. 

The two films together provided 81-percent of ticket sales according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline.
