One Fantastic achievement of the Inca’s is the fact that their empire is built largely on the basis of diplomacy and politics, rather than war, which makes them a lot more unique then the Roman Empire, or the British and Spanish empires. The Inca Empire consisted of a range of different languages, peoples, customs, cultures and religions. Of course everyone had to pay taxes and swear their loyalty to the Sapa Inca (or emperor), however many kingdoms were offered things such as luxury goods and high quality textiles. The Inca’s were certainly well organized politically and militarily, and had an economy that flourished with wealth. Most kingdoms peacefully accepted their annexation into the Inca Empire. These people had to learn the ways of the Inca, including the language, but really, they were largely untouched. The Inca never took away their rights to their own religion or customs.
Their Road System is also a great achievement. There were 2 main roads that went from one side of the empire to the other. These had interconnecting roads that lead to every corner of the empire. It was said that all roads would eventually get you to Cusco, the Inca capital. These roads were well built and messages could get from city to city fairly quickly. Armies could be mobilized to where ever the trouble was in no time. Trade therefore was also easier to accomplish.
Incan aqueducts are also quite amazing. Machu Picchu happens to be one of the most famous Inca cities that has a complex aqueduct system. Machu Picchu was not a place where they received enough fresh water. Only enough for good agriculture. The mountains flow with water mainly during the warmer months, and was collected by a stone collection system. Engineer’s did very well do be able use the rock in the mountain as the canal itself, and lined the whole thing with rock. The water in turn could reach the settlement for households and ceremonial worship. The Inca’s were very resourceful by doing this, and shows the world today they were quite advanced for their time.
Medicine – The Incas performed cranial surgery called trepanation in order to cure mental illnesses or injuries where they drilled a hole in the patient’s skull, let them bleed and then performed a ritual in order to let the bad spirits out.
A further achievement was Inca store houses. The Inca understood how important it was to feed its growing empire, so thought of a way to do it. One of the best preserved ones stands at Ollantaytambo in Southern Peru, and the storehouse there is actually built onto the side of the mountain face at a substantial alтιтude. High alтιтude meant more wind and is usually a lot colder. but whether they stored maize, potato’s, grain or other crops, the store house defended it well and was helped by ventilation. And these were built all over the empire. Food could therefore reach every Conner of it.
These are but three examples that I truly like myself. There is certainly more achievements that you can seek out.
