EXCLUSIVEI’m A Celeb jungle flooded after four days of heavy tropical rain as downpour causes havoc on roads

A continuous downpour of rain has flooded the I’m A Celebrity jungle and threatens the safety of the contestants after they have been camping there for less than a week.

Heavy tropical rain has battered the camp since Monday when the first thunder and lightning storm struck.

So rough has the weather been, that trees have fallen down blocking the road leading up to the campsite and four-by-four vehicles can be seen battling through the rivers that have flooded.

It comes after a show insider told MailOnline: ‘The jungle camp cannot cope with this level of rain and the thing is, when it rains like this, it’s not fun for anyone involved. In fact, it’s miserable. It dampens the mood and ultimately ruins the show.’

When it rains this heavily, campmates usually hide in the Bush Telegraph – the hut in which they speak to the camera – to shelter from the majority of the rain.

The storm is due to end today and the campmates will enjoy around four days of dry weather – no doubt quelling ITV’s fears a celebrity could walk due to the rain making camp life miserable.

It comes after McFly's Danny Jones confessed: 'Since it's rained I've not washed. Don't fight it, just stink! What do spiders do? They don't get up and shower, do they? They just go 'I'm gonna go out for the day' (pictured)

In last night’s episode, Ant and Dec hid underneath umbrellas in between filming and tried to make light of the situation by joking: ‘It’s raining Koalas and Dingos here.’

Meanwhile, at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where last year’s contestants Tony Bellew and Frankie Dettori were pH๏τographed with real koalas, the site has completely flooded.

Rain causes serious complications for the show flooding important locations and has the danger of making camp life extra tough for the contestants which can push them to quit.

While production staff can determine how much food contestants get and always ensure they stay healthy by getting at least the minimum intake of calories per day in their rice and beans – the weather is an uncontrollable and potentially show-ruining factor.

Though there is a retractable canopy 50 ft in the air above the camp, preventing the stars from getting soaked and keeping the campfire lit, it does not cover the whole of the camp.

The ITV series’ longtime hosts, Ant and Dec, both 49, revealed drips slide off the canopy and fall on the celebrities as they sleep.

A source added to MailOnline: ‘A lot of the camp is not under shelter — it’s not like the roof at Wimbledon!’

If the current conditions continue it’s likely the celebrities could be evacuated as a safety precaution as seen in previous years.
