A Florida community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nicole Grayson, a devoted mother whose final act has touched hearts across the country.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the tragedy unfolded on the afternoon of July 18 at Ed Stone Park in DeLand, Florida.

Authorities say Nicole’s 4-year-old son was playing near the edge of the St. Johns River when he accidentally dropped an item into the water. As he tried to retrieve it, he slipped and was carried into the river’s current.

Without hesitation, Nicole rushed into the water.

Witnesses said her only concern was keeping her young son above the surface as the current pulled them farther from shore. Even as the situation became increasingly dangerous, she remained focused on protecting her child.

People nearby immediately called 911, while a quick-thinking bystander flagged down a pᴀssing boat. The boater threw life preservers toward the mother and child in an effort to keep them afloat.

Moments later, the boat reached the pair, and Nicole’s son was safely pulled aboard without injury.

Nicole, however, had disappeared beneath the water.

Another witness entered the river to help, and together they were able to bring her onto the boat. A bystander immediately began CPR while emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene.

Nicole was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical teams worked tirelessly for several hours in hopes of saving her life.

Despite every effort, she pᴀssed away later that evening.

She was 43 years old.
