When Axel Horgan was born on May 12, 2022, his parents knew their little boy was facing an extraordinary medical journey.

Axel was born with CLOVES syndrome, an extremely rare condition that can cause abnormal overgrowth of tissue, vascular malformations, skin changes and skeletal differences.

From birth, his left leg and foot were significantly larger than expected, along with a port-wine stain and other vascular abnormalities.

After months of testing, including genetic analysis, biopsies and MRI scans, Axel was diagnosed with CLOVES syndrome in July 2022.

The outlook his parents received was heartbreaking.

Doctors warned Eddie Horgan and Sarah Curtin that Axel could face serious challenges with his development and might not survive beyond early childhood. They were also told that walking independently might never become possible.

But Axel had other plans. 💙

His early years have involved hospital stays, significant discomfort, surgeries and ongoing medical care. At times, he has needed a feeding tube, while doctors have also monitored complications ᴀssociated with his condition.

Through it all, Axel has continued moving forward.

With intensive physiotherapy, determination and the unwavering support of his family, the little boy has taken his first steps. 👣✨

For his parents, seeing Axel stand and walk is more than a milestone.

It is a moment that represents everything he has already overcome.

His medical team has also been exploring treatments designed to reduce his discomfort and improve his long-term mobility, including major procedures and the eventual use of prosthetics.

His family continues to travel for specialized medical care and therapies while doing everything they can to give Axel the best possible quality of life.

CLOVES syndrome remains incredibly rare, and every child affected by it can experience the condition differently.

But Axel’s journey offers a powerful reminder that a difficult medical prognosis does not always determine a child’s future.

Sometimes, progress comes one tiny step at a time.
