💔 PART 2 — THE VAULT THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

💔 PART 2 — THE VAULT THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

“Get the girl out of here!” I shouted.

Gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon.

My men returned fire as Marco dragged me behind a stone monument. I pulled Lily into my arms, shielding her tiny body while bullets struck the pavement around us.

“Close your eyes, sweetheart.”

She buried her face against my chest.

“Are you going to let them take my key?” she sobbed.

“No,” I promised. “And nobody is taking you.”

I didn’t know why I had made that promise to a child I had met less than ten minutes ago.

But I knew one thing.

Whoever wanted Lily ᴅᴇᴀᴅ had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

Within seconds, my men forced the attackers back toward their SUV. The vehicle sped away, leaving one wounded man behind.

I approached him slowly.

“Who sent you?”

The man laughed through bloodied teeth.

“You still don’t understand, Moretti. The girl isn’t the target.”

His eyes shifted toward Lily.

“It’s what she knows.”

Before I could question him further, he bit down on something hidden between his teeth. His body convulsed, and Marco cursed as the man collapsed.

A suicide capsule.

Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure he never talked.

I looked at Lily.

She was clutching the brᴀss key so тιԍнтly that its sharp edges had left marks on her palm.

“Let’s get you somewhere safe,” I told her.

She shook her head.

“Mr. Henry said I have to find the room before midnight.”

“What room?”

“The one with the black birds.”

My blood ran cold.

Twenty years ago, my father had ordered every door in the old Moretti mansion sealed after my brother Adrian disappeared. The servants called the forbidden underground chamber the Raven Room. According to family legend, it had been built by my grandfather to protect documents so dangerous that even the police couldn’t be allowed to find them.

My father had always insisted it was nothing but a story.

But I knew better.

Because the night Adrian vanished, I had heard my brother screaming behind a locked door beneath that very mansion.

And the next morning, my father told me Adrian was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

I had never seen his body.

Not once.

“Marco,” I said quietly, “prepare the car. We’re going to the old estate.”

He stared at me in disbelief.

“Boss, that property has been abandoned for twenty years.”

“Then we shouldn’t have any trouble getting inside.”

He didn’t argue again.

The old Moretti mansion stood beyond iron gates swallowed by ivy. Moonlight spilled across its cracked windows, illuminating the stone ravens carved above the entrance.

Lily stared at the building.

“This is where Mr. Henry took me once.”

I turned sharply.

“When?”

“Last Thursday. He said he wanted to show me something, but then a bad man came. Mr. Henry told me to hide.”

My chest тιԍнтened.

“Did you see the bad man?”

She nodded.

“He had a ring like yours.”

I looked down at my right hand.

The black signet ring bearing the Moretti crest had belonged to my father. I had inherited it after his death.

There were only three such rings ever made.

One belonged to me.

One had been buried with my father.

And the third had disappeared with Adrian.

I said nothing as we entered the mansion.

Behind a rotting tapestry in the eastern hallway, Lily found a narrow iron door. She reached into her sweater and carefully removed the brᴀss key.

“Mr. Henry said the door would know who I was.”

I knelt beside her.

“Lily, listen to me. Whatever is behind this door, you don’t have to be afraid.”

She looked up at me with eyes far too serious for a five-year-old.

“I’m not afraid of the room.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

She swallowed.

“I’m afraid you’ll be angry when you see what’s inside.”

The key slid into the lock.

It turned with a heavy metallic click.

The door swung open.

Beyond it lay a narrow staircase descending into darkness. At the bottom, a steel vault door bore the same raven-and-crown symbol engraved on Lily’s key.

Marco raised his flashlight.

“Boss… there’s writing here.”

Three words had been carved into the steel.

FOR THE TRUE HEIR.

My hands went cold.

I inserted the key.

The vault opened.

Inside were dozens of sealed files, several black ledgers, and a row of pH๏τographs arranged across a wooden table. Dust covered everything except one envelope sitting in the center.

My name was written on it.

In my father’s handwriting.

I tore it open.

The letter contained only a few lines.

Dante,

If you are reading this, then Adrian has failed to keep the truth buried—or someone has finally found the child we hid.

You were never supposed to become the head of this family.

And the night your brother disappeared, you were not the only son who was betrayed.

I read the final sentence twice.

Then I turned to the pH๏τographs.

The first showed my father standing beside Adrian, both of them looking directly into the camera.

The second showed Nicholas Ferraro—the man I had buried that morning—holding a newborn baby outside a hospital.

And the third…

The third pH๏τograph made my knees weaken.

A young woman stood beside Nicholas, holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket. She had Lily’s reddish-brown hair and the same small dimple in her cheek.

On the back, someone had written:

“Lily’s mother. The last surviving witness. Dante’s daughter must never learn who her father is.”

My daughter?

I had never married. I had never knowingly fathered a child. And yet, there was a pH๏τograph of a woman holding a newborn, with my name connected to her in a secret my family had apparently buried for two decades.

I turned toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, do you know who the woman in this picture is?”

She nodded slowly.

“That’s my mommy.”

The room spun around me.

“Where is she now?”

Lily’s little mouth trembled.

“Mr. Henry said she went to sleep and didn’t wake up.”

I crouched in front of her.

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“He said she didn’t die. He said the bad men made everybody think she did.”

Before I could ask another question, a phone began vibrating inside the vault.

It was an old black telephone resting beneath the ledgers.

Marco stared at it.

“Boss, that line isn’t connected to anything.”

The phone rang again.

I picked it up.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice I had spent twenty years trying to forget.

“Hello, little brother.”

My breath stopped.

“Adrian?”

A quiet laugh came through the receiver.

“You finally found the room.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere your father made sure you would never look.”

I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles turned white.

“You let me believe you were ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.”

“No, Dante. Father made you believe I was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. There’s a difference.”

“Why is Lily connected to all this?”

Silence.

Then Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Because she’s the reason I disappeared.”

I stared at the child beside me.

Adrian continued.

“Listen carefully. The men who attacked you today weren’t trying to steal the key. They wanted to make sure you opened the vault.”

My stomach тιԍнтened.

“Why?”

“Because there’s one final file you haven’t found yet. It’s hidden beneath the floor.”

Marco immediately swept his flashlight across the stone tiles.

Then Adrian spoke again.

“And when you read it, you’ll understand why Nicholas brought Lily to you.”

A sharp crack echoed through the vault.

The lights went out.

Someone had locked the entrance from the other side.

Marco drew his gun.

“Boss, we’re trapped!”

Then Lily began crying.

Not because of the darkness.

Because she was staring at the far wall.

A hidden panel had slid open, revealing a small room beyond it.

Inside stood a man’s silhouette.

He stepped into the light of Marco’s flashlight.

He was older, thinner, and his face was marked by a long scar.

But I recognized him instantly.

My brother.

Adrian Moretti.

He looked at Lily first.

Then at me.

And finally, he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Dante, that little girl isn’t your daughter.”

He paused, his eyes filling with something that looked like grief.

“She’s your daughter’s twin sister’s child. And one of those girls was switched at birth.”

I couldn’t speak.

Adrian reached into his coat and produced a second pH๏τograph.

It showed two newborn babies lying side by side.

One wore a silver bracelet.

The other wore a tiny black ribbon bearing the Moretti crest.

On the back, a message had been written in red ink:

“Only one child was meant to survive.”

Adrian looked directly at me.

“There’s something else you need to know, little brother.”

He glanced toward the locked vault door.

“The person who ordered the attack in Boston today wasn’t our enemy.”

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“It was the person standing beside you at Nicholas’s funeral.”

My blood turned to ice.

Because there had been only one person standing beside me when we buried Nicholas Ferraro.

Marco.

And behind us, the vault door began to open.
