A devastating tragedy in High Point, North Carolina, has left a community grieving after authorities confirmed that a father fatally sH๏τ his wife and three children before taking his own life inside their family home.

The incident occurred on the morning of January 7, 2023, at a residence on Mossy Meadow Drive. Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Robert J. Crayton Jr., and the victims as his wife, 46-year-old Athalia A. Crayton, and their children: Kasin, 18, Nyla, 16, and Nasir, 10.

According to investigators, what unfolded inside the home transformed an ordinary family morning into a scene of unimaginable loss.

The first signs of trouble came shortly after 7:00 AM, when two individuals, aged 22 and 25, were seen running down the street screaming for help. Their frantic warnings prompted an immediate emergency response from law enforcement.

When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered all five family members deceased inside the home.

Authorities have since described the investigation as complex and emotionally difficult, with little clear evidence explaining what led to the tragedy. Officials have stated that the exact motive may never be known.

Lieutenant Patrick Welch of the High Point Police Department acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the case, noting that in some incidents, the thoughts and intentions behind such actions “die with them.”

The scene itself had a profound impact on responding officers. Captain Matt Truitt, a veteran law enforcement officer with more than 18 years of service, said he had never encountered a case of this magnitude in the city.

High Point Police Chief Travis Stroud also spoke about the emotional toll placed on investigators and first responders, emphasizing the need to monitor officer well-being following exposure to such traumatic events.

Records show that law enforcement had previous contact with the Crayton household dating back to 2014. Most recently, on January 3, just days before the tragedy, Robert Crayton was subject to an involuntary mental health commitment order.

While officials have not confirmed how or whether mental health issues contributed directly to the incident, it is believed to be one of several factors being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Despite these efforts, authorities have stressed that some questions may remain unanswered permanently.

The loss of Athalia Crayton and her three children has left relatives and neighbors devastated, struggling to comprehend how a family home could become the site of such a heartbreaking event.

As the community mourns, investigators continue to piece together the final days leading up to one of the most tragic cases in High Point’s recent history.
