Hartlepool fell silent on Wednesday as hundreds of police officers, colleagues and members of the public gathered to pay their final respects to PC Matthew Blades, the 37-year-old Cleveland Police officer who lost his life in the A66 tragedy.

The funeral was held at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Matthew’s hometown, with standard bearers representing police forces from across the UK lining the streets. Officers stood in formation as the hearse slowly approached the church, creating a powerful final tribute from the policing community.

But among all the uniforms, flags and ceremonial tributes, one small detail carried perhaps the most personal message.

On top of Matthew’s hearse was a floral tribute spelling out “DAD.”

Just three letters — but for Matthew’s family, they represented an entire life that had been taken away far too soon.

Matthew was a husband and father of two young boys. His wife previously described him as her beloved husband, best friend and a devoted father, while friends and colleagues remembered him not only for his work as an officer but also for his involvement in the local community as a youth football coach.

Matthew died alongside fellow Cleveland Police officer PC Tom Clough, 38, in the A66 collision near Middlesbrough on August 22. Five young men travelling in the other vehicle also lost their lives, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain subject to an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

For those gathered outside St Joseph’s, the occasion was therefore more than a police funeral.

It was a community saying goodbye to a man who had left home to do his job — and never returned to the two children waiting for their dad.

As officers from across Britain stood along the streets, Matthew’s family faced a moment no family should ever have to experience. The scale of the ceremony showed how widely his loss had been felt, but the floral word above the hearse brought everything back to something much more intimate.

Dad.

A simple word that captured the person Matthew was away from the uniform — a husband, a father, a son, a friend and someone whose absence will be felt most deeply by the two boys he left behind.

🕊️ For an entire town, it was a final farewell. For two young boys, it was the moment they said goodbye to their dad.
