CINCINNATI, OHIO — Four young men are being remembered across Cincinnati after a vehicle carrying five people crashed through a guardrail and plunged into Mill Creek on August 15.

The victims were identified as 21-year-old Khiel Ivory, 19-year-old Ja’Vae Thomas, 22-year-old Demarco Tappler, and 18-year-old Demonte Brady Jr.

A 27-year-old woman survived the crash and was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening.

For the families and friends left behind, the tragedy is difficult to comprehend.

All four victims were still so young.

Their adult lives were only beginning.

The crash occurred Saturday afternoon near the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ end of Queen City Avenue, just north of the Western Hills Viaduct.

Authorities said five people were inside a 2019 Infiniti when the vehicle struck a guardrail and plunged into the creek below.

By the time emergency crews arrived, the four men had reportedly been trapped inside the submerged vehicle for approximately an hour.

First responders eventually recovered them from the wreckage.

For several families, an ordinary August afternoon had suddenly become a devastating loss.

REMEMBERING KHIEL IVORY

Friends have gathered near Mill Creek, leaving memories and grief at the location where the four young lives ended.

For Nell, a close friend of Khiel Ivory, the reality still feels difficult to accept.

He knows his friend is gone, but part of him continues to struggle with the idea that the person he had been texting only hours earlier will never respond again.

Nell remembered Ivory as peaceful, ambitious, caring and someone who brought positive energy to the people around him.

Khiel worked as a nurse and, according to his friend, had built his life around helping others. He also operated a group home and took his responsibilities seriously.

Those accomplishments are especially meaningful because Khiel was only 21.

Nell said Ivory had worked a 13-hour shift before reaching out to ask where his friend was and what he was doing.

Later, Nell sent another message asking what Khiel was doing, unaware that his friend had already been involved in the tragic crash.

About two hours later, someone contacted him and asked whether he had heard about the accident.

An ordinary text conversation suddenly became one of the final connections Nell would ever have with his friend.

Standing near the damaged guardrail and the creek made the loss even more painful.

Nell, who works detailing cars, had recently worked on Ivory’s vehicle. He described his friend as someone who wanted good things not only for himself but for everyone around him.

That is the Khiel Ivory he wants people to remember.

Not simply the young man inside a vehicle involved in a tragic crash.

But the nurse.

The caregiver.

The 21-year-old who was already building a life dedicated to helping others.

A FUTURE CUT SHORT

The same heartbreaking reality now faces the families of Ja’Vae Thomas, Demarco Tappler and Demonte Brady Jr.

Ja’Vae was only 19.

His great-uncle, Rufus Allen Jr., said he initially heard about the crash without realizing that someone from his own family was among the victims.

Everything changed when his sister called and told him Ja’Vae had been inside the vehicle.

Allen described the moment as overwhelming, saying the news left him struggling to process what had happened.

Although he had not seen Ja’Vae as often as the teenager grew older, he remembered him as an outstanding young man.

At 19, Ja’Vae should have been figuring out where adulthood would take him — work, education, relationships and dreams that had not yet taken shape.

Instead, his family is now preparing to say goodbye.

Four young men.

Four families.

Four futures that will never unfold as their loved ones imagined.
