A Wisconsin court has sentenced Samantha Smith to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, in connection with the heartbreaking case involving the pᴀssing of her four-year-old daughter, Zoey Chafer.

The case has drawn widespread attention because of Zoey’s medical condition and the devastating circumstances surrounding the investigation.

Zoey, who lived with severe cerebral palsy, was nonverbal, unable to walk, and relied entirely on a feeding tube for nutrition and hydration. According to investigators, she depended completely on her caregivers for every aspect of her daily life.

Emergency responders were called to the family’s apartment in Hayward, Wisconsin, on July 28, 2021, after reports that Zoey was unresponsive. Despite efforts to help her, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding her pᴀssing, toxicology results revealed an extremely high concentration of alcohol in her system. According to court records, the medical examiner determined that the cause of death was acute ethanol toxicity, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Prosecutors argued that the evidence pointed to a pattern of abuse and neglect involving a child who was physically unable to protect herself.

Smith later admitted to charges related to child neglect and abuse, resulting in the sentence handed down by the court. Falkner has also been convicted in connection with the case and is awaiting sentencing.
