A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken St. Louis, Missouri, after 7-month-old Kiyomi Parker died from a gunsH๏τ wound inside a home, leading prosecutors to file multiple felony charges against her father in a case that has renewed concerns about firearm safety around children.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting on June 25 at a residence in the 8400 block of North Broadway in the Baden neighborhood.

When first responders arrived, they found the infant suffering from a gunsH๏τ wound. Kiyomi was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff attempted lifesaving treatment. Despite those efforts, she was later pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

Investigators allege that a 10-year-old boy accessed a loaded firearm that had been left unsecured inside the home. According to court documents, the weapon was reportedly stored beneath a mattress, where authorities say it was accessible to children. Police also stated that a 7-year-old child was present inside the residence when the shooting occurred.

Following the investigation, prosecutors charged 19-year-old Ca’Marion Pawnell, of East St. Louis, Illinois, with second-degree murder, first-degree child endangerment resulting in death, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities allege Pawnell failed to properly secure the firearm, creating conditions that allowed the tragic incident to occur. He is currently being held without bond. The charges represent allegations, and under the law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
