💔✈️ Mother and Toddler Stranded in Mallorca After New UK Pᴀssport Rules Prevent Return Home

A family holiday to Mallorca has turned into an unexpected ordeal after a 25-year-old mother and her two-year-old daughter were unable to board their return flight to the United Kingdom because of recently introduced pᴀssport requirements.

Tegan van der Merwe, from Manchester, traveled to Palma de Mallorca with her young daughter for what was meant to be a five-day vacation. Instead, the pair now face an uncertain wait in Spain after being informed they could not return to the UK using their Dutch pᴀssports alone.

According to Tegan, immigration officials advised that recent rule changes require certain British dual nationals to carry additional documentation proving their right to enter the UK. Although she has settled status and says her daughter automatically qualifies for British citizenship because she was born in the UK, she claims they were still unable to travel without the required British pᴀssport or other accepted documentation.

As a result, the mother and daughter have remained stranded in Mallorca.

With their holiday funds quickly disappearing, Tegan says they have already been forced to leave their original H๏τel and move into less expensive self-catering accommodation near a busy nightlife district. She described the experience as frightening while caring for a two-year-old child far from home.

Seeking ᴀssistance, Tegan traveled to the British Consulate in Palma. She said the journey involved multiple bus rides followed by a lengthy walk in high temperatures while accompanying her daughter. According to her account, she was directed to complete the pᴀssport application process remotely, including obtaining pH๏τocopies of documents and mailing the required paperwork.

She also said she spent approximately €60 sending the application and now fears the processing time could leave them in Spain for several more weeks.

Beyond the logistical challenges, Tegan says the financial impact has become overwhelming. Having already spent much of her savings on the holiday, she is now paying for unexpected accommodation and daily living expenses while being unable to work and earn an income.

The situation has drawn attention to the importance of understanding updated travel requirements before leaving the country. Travelers who hold dual nationality or rely on non-British pᴀssports should ensure they meet all current entry requirements and carry the necessary documentation before departure to avoid similar disruptions.

For now, Tegan’s priority is simply getting herself and her young daughter safely back home. While officials continue processing the necessary paperwork, the family remains in Mallorca, hoping their unexpected journey will soon come to an end.
