🏉💙 They Thought She Might Not Survive Childhood — Then Mui Thomas Made History

Doctors once feared that Mui Thomas might not survive childhood. Today, decades later, she is remembered not for the condition she was born with, but for the barriers she refused to let define her.

Born in Hong Kong with harlequin ichthyosis, an extremely rare genetic skin disorder, Mui has lived with a condition that causes the skin to develop and shed at an unusually rapid rate. The condition can bring serious medical complications and has shaped much of her life from an early age.

When Mui was just three years old, she was adopted by Rog and Tina Thomas. For her, their decision meant far more than finding a home. They gave her a family that believed her future could extend far beyond the expectations others had placed on her.

Growing up, however, Mui quickly discovered that the world could be far less accepting. People stared. Some made cruel remarks. She also faced cyberbullying because of her appearance.

But instead of allowing those experiences to silence her, Mui chose to step forward.

She became a rugby referee in Hong Kong, and her family’s initiative has recognized her as the world’s first rugby referee living with harlequin ichthyosis. She also pursued other pᴀssions, becoming a yoga instructor, runner and outspoken advocate for greater understanding and acceptance.

Her journey eventually became part of The Girl Behind The Face, an initiative created to challenge prejudice, cyberbullying and the tendency to judge people based solely on their appearance.

For Mui, speaking publicly about her life has meant turning something that once attracted unwanted attention into an opportunity to create change.

Her appearance may have been the first thing strangers noticed, but it was never the whole story.

Behind the condition is an athlete. A referee. A teacher. A runner. An advocate. And a woman who refused to let other people’s ᴀssumptions determine what she could accomplish.

Mui’s condition did not disappear. The challenges did not magically vanish. What changed was her decision to keep moving forward despite them.

She did not try to become someone else simply to make the world more comfortable.

Instead, she challenged the world to look again—to see the person behind the face.
