The legal proceedings in the Frisco track meet stabbing case are continuing after 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony officially filed a notice of appeal following his conviction and 35-year prison sentence for the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

For Anthony and his legal team, the appeal marks the next stage of the judicial process.

For Austin Metcalf’s family, it is another painful reminder that the case may not yet be fully behind them.

During the trial, Anthony’s defense argued that he acted in self-defense during a confrontation beneath a team tent at a rainy high school track meet. Prosecutors, however, maintained that Anthony escalated the dispute by pulling a knife and fatally stabbing Austin in the chest.

After hearing the evidence, the jury rejected the self-defense claim and found Anthony guilty.

Following the verdict, Austin’s parents and his twin brother delivered emotional victim impact statements, describing the future Austin would never have and the lasting impact his loss has had on their family.

Anthony’s appeal is expected to raise legal arguments related to the trial, including claims concerning the fairness of the proceedings and other issues previously raised by the defense. Court records also indicate that Anthony has requested a court-appointed appellate attorney, stating that he cannot afford legal representation despite earlier fundraising efforts connected to his defense.

There have also been claims circulating online suggesting that new evidence presented by Austin’s family could increase Anthony’s sentence by an additional 10 years. However, there is no official confirmation supporting those reports. Anthony’s sentence remains 35 years unless a court rules otherwise through future legal proceedings.

An appeal does not automatically overturn a conviction or change a sentence. Instead, appellate courts review whether legal errors may have affected the outcome of the trial.

While the appeal process moves forward, Austin’s family continues to grieve the loss of their son and brother, knowing that another chapter of the legal process still lies ahead.
