๐จ๐ Penn State Student Fatally SHเนฯ Walking Home After NBA Finals; One Teen Arrested, Second Suspect Still Sought
Authorities are continuing an intensive multi-agency search for a second teenage suspect following the fatal shooting of 22-year-old William “Billy” Schmidt, a Penn State student whose death has left his family, friends, and community heartbroken.
Schmidt was killed in the early hours of June 6 while walking home through South Philadelphia after spending the evening watching the NBA Finals with friends at a neighborhood bar. According to investigators, the tragedy unfolded just minutes from his family’s home.
Philadelphia police say the shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. near Durfor Street. Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives reportedly shows Schmidt interacting with two individuals moments before the gunfire. Investigators allege that Schmidt asked for his cellphone to be returned before a sHเนฯ was fired, leading prosecutors to believe the encounter began as a robbery.
The investigation has resulted in murder charges against two 16-year-old suspects. One suspect, Azzubair Outen-Fleming, was arrested on July 1 in Colorado Springs after authorities determined he had fled Pennsylvania. He is expected to face charges including murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and firearms-related offenses.
The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, remains the subject of an active manhunt. Prosecutors allege Smith fired the fatal sHเนฯ, though the allegations must ultimately be proven in court. Law enforcement officials have urged the public not to approach him if spotted, warning that he may be armed and dangerous. A reward remains available for information leading to his arrest.
Authorities also arrested Donte Abdulmalik, Outen-Fleming’s stepfather, accusing him of helping the teenager evade law enforcement by transporting him out of Pennsylvania. He faces separate charges related to allegedly แดssisting a fugitive.
As investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage, forensic evidence, witness interviews, and digital records, Billy’s family is remembering the young man whose future was filled with promise.
Schmidt was entering his senior year at Penn State World Campus, where he studied digital journalism and media. Friends and professors describe him as kind, hardworking, and compแดssionate. His death prompted an outpouring of grief across the university community, with classmates, neighbors, and loved ones gathering at a vigil to celebrate his life.
Billy’s father has spoken publicly about the devastating loss, saying his son “never hurt or bothered a soul.” While no legal outcome can erase the pain of losing him, he hopes everyone responsible will be brought to justice before another family experiences a similar tragedy.
The investigation remains active, and authorities continue urging anyone with information about Kaiseem Smith’s whereabouts to contact the Philadelphia Police Department or the U.S. Marshals Service immediately. As the legal process moves forward, prosecutors must establish the facts through evidence presented before the court while Billy’s loved ones continue honoring the memory of a young man whose life was cut tragically short.
