Nearly a month after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells was found in the waters near Horn Island, Mississippi, three of his friends—along with their attorneys—have returned to the remote barrier island in an effort to better understand the location where the tragic events unfolded. 🏝️

The visit, announced on August 6, 2026, comes as the investigation remains ongoing and public interest in the case continues to grow.

Nolan, a recent high school graduate and incoming college football player from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, disappeared on July 4, 2026, during a large Independence Day gathering on Horn Island.

The undeveloped island, located about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast and accessible only by private boat, attracted hundreds of visitors that day. 🚤

Nolan traveled there with a group of friends, including Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour.

GPS records reportedly show their boat left the mainland around 9:56 a.m. and reached the island shortly after 11:00 a.m.

Nolan was last reportedly seen around 3:00 p.m., wearing blue swim trunks and sunglᴀsses. 🕶️

According to investigators, the boat departed the island around 4:31 p.m. without him.

Later that evening, one of the friends contacted the U.S. Coast Guard at approximately 11:00 p.m. to report Nolan missing, while his family also alerted authorities.

A large multi-agency search quickly began, involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, and numerous volunteers. 🚁🚤

On the morning of July 6, a National Park Service ranger discovered a body matching Nolan’s description along the island’s northwestern shoreline.

The following day, dental records officially confirmed his idenтιтy.

Early in the investigation, officials stated there were no immediate signs of foul play and suggested drowning as one possible explanation, while emphasizing that the investigation remained active.

An official autopsy was completed by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, but as of early August 2026, the final report—including toxicology findings—had not yet been publicly released.

Authorities have also indicated that the evidence will eventually be presented to a grand jury. ⚖️

Seeking additional answers, Nolan’s family—represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump—requested an independent autopsy conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr.

Preliminary findings released on July 22 listed both the cause and manner of Nolan’s pᴀssing as:

“Undetermined pending investigation.”

The independent report found:

No fractures
No major lacerations
No significant deep tissue injuries
However, doctors did identify an area of red discoloration within the soft tissue at the back of Nolan’s head.

Because of natural decomposition and the previous official autopsy—which included removal of certain organs and neck structures—the pathologist explained that a complete examination of the airway, lungs, and neck was no longer possible.

As a result, Dr. Mitchell stated he could not rule out the possibility of non-accidental factors, while also noting that no conclusion could yet be reached. 🩺

In the weeks following Nolan’s pᴀssing, intense online speculation spread across social media.

Much of that attention focused on the three friends who had accompanied him to Horn Island.

Despite not being named as suspects and not facing any criminal charges, Hudson, Pitalo, and Seymour have reportedly received online harᴀssment, threats, and accusations.

In response, they retained Mississippi attorney J. Tyler Cox and later added high-profile defamation attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik to their legal team.

Their attorneys have repeatedly stated that the three friends are:

“Completely innocent”

and

“Had nothing whatsoever to do with the tragic death of Nolan Wells.” ⚖️

The legal team has also announced plans to pursue defamation claims against individuals they believe have made false public accusations.

Meanwhile, a crowdfunding campaign created to ᴀssist with legal expenses has reportedly raised substantial financial support.

Separately, federal authorities have charged at least three individuals from outside Mississippi in connection with alleged threats related to the investigation.

Officials have clarified that those cases are not connected to Nolan’s friends or to any allegation regarding Nolan’s pᴀssing.

On August 6, attorneys Cox and Paltzik announced that they, along with Hudson, Pitalo, and Seymour, planned to revisit Horn Island the following day.

According to the attorneys, the purpose of the visit is not to collect evidence, but rather to better understand the island’s geography, layout, and surrounding conditions firsthand.

Paltzik explained that personally seeing the location was important as they continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case. 🏝️

As of early August 2026, several important questions remain unanswered.

The official cause of Nolan Wells’ pᴀssing has not yet been determined.

The state autopsy report remains pending.

Law enforcement continues its investigation.
