What began with what seemed like a common childhood illness quickly turned into a life-threatening battle for 11-month-old Taylor Marshall—and a journey that would forever change his family’s lives.

Three months ago, Taylor contracted meningococcal meningitis type W, a rare but aggressive bacterial infection. His mother, 22-year-old Terri Lewsley, was left heartbroken when doctors warned that her baby had only hours to live.

Taylor first became unwell on April 20, showing only mild symptoms that appeared similar to a routine childhood illness. By the following morning, however, he had developed an extremely high fever.

“His whole body was burning H๏τ, yet he was shaking as if he were freezing,” Terri recalled.
She immediately called an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. Because Taylor briefly seemed to improve and appeared cheerful, he was allowed to return home. But shortly afterward, his condition deteriorated dramatically.

He stopped eating and drinking, his face became pale, and Terri called emergency services once again.

Within hours, a rash spread rapidly across Taylor’s body as the infection overwhelmed his system. Doctors warned that his condition was critical and urged his parents to prepare for the worst.

“His whole body seemed to lose its vitality. His face and limbs gradually turned black. We could do nothing but pray.”

To save his life, surgeons had to amputate eight fingers and one foot after the infection severely affected his circulation. His kidneys also began to fail, requiring dialysis during his treatment.

“He was always smiling whenever the doctors came to check on him. He amazed everyone with his brave fighting spirit despite all the pain. He’s truly an amazing child, and I’m so proud of him.”
Although Taylor’s journey now includes rehabilitation, skin graft surgeries, and ongoing medical care, his family remains deeply grateful that he survived.
