When little Elijah was born at just 31 weeks, his parents knew their tiny baby was facing an incredibly difficult beginning. ๐ถ๐
He arrived prematurely with serious lung problems, including bilateral pneumothorax, along with two complex heart conditions โ Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and pulmonary atresia (PA).
From his very first days, Elijah’s life was filled with hospital stays, breathing support and medical procedures. ๐ฅ๐
But his biggest battle was still ahead.
๐ซ๐ FIVE HEART PROCEDURES BEFORE HIS FIRST OPEN-HEART SURGERY
Before Elijah reached his first birthday, he underwent five separate heart procedures using catheters.
Eventually, doctors performed his first major open-heart operation when he was one year old.
Even after that surgery, his family was warned that more heart procedures could be necessary throughout his life. ๐ข
But one of the most frightening moments came when Elijah was only two weeks old.
His condition was not improving as doctors had hoped.
He needed a ventilator, and his family was asked to consider palliative care.
For his mother, that was impossible to accept. ๐

๐ฅ๐ข THEN DOCTORS DISCOVERED A TERRIFYING PROBLEM
As Elijah continued struggling, doctors discovered that his ventilator had become blocked by a large amount of mucus.
He had also not been receiving enough suctioning.
The blockage contributed to his left lung collapsing, adding another serious complication to his already fragile condition. ๐ซ๐
Once the problem was identified and addressed, Elijah continued fighting.
There would be more procedures.
More frightening moments.
More uncertainty.
But somehow, this tiny boy kept moving forward. ๐

Elijah eventually made it through those early battles.
Today, he is four years old.
His journey has continued to include additional challenges. He has since been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
But to his family, those diagnoses are only part of his story.
