Just days after welcoming her second child, Texas mother Krysten Pacheco found herself fighting for her life.

What began as an infection following a C-section quickly developed into septic shock, leaving Krysten critically ill and ultimately costing her both hands and both feet.

In October, Krysten had just given birth to her daughter, Amelia, at a hospital in Pleasanton, Texas. After returning home, she began feeling feverish.

Within days, her condition became so serious that she was airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio, where doctors told her she had gone into septic shock.

She spent two weeks in intensive care, relying on a breathing tube as doctors fought to save her life.

Then came devastating news.

Before Thanksgiving, Krysten learned that the blood flow to her hands and feet had been severely compromised. The damage had become so extensive that all four limbs would need to be amputated.

“My hands and feet were black. They looked like a person who had gotten frostbite,” she recalled, explaining that her medical team had tried everything they could to prevent the amputations.

After the surgeries, Krysten faced another long road to recovery, undergoing about a dozen skin grafts to repair damaged tissue.

She spent nearly two more months in the hospital before being transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

Finally, on February 11, almost four months after giving birth, Krysten was able to go home. 🏡❤️

Today, she is focused on something that matters more than anything: being a mother to her two children — her baby daughter Amelia and her two-year-old son.

With more rehabilitation ahead, Krysten hopes to eventually receive prosthetics and regain even more independence.

But perhaps the most emotional part of her recovery has nothing to do with physical rehabilitation.

It’s the time she lost with her newborn.

Krysten says she still struggles with the guilt of not being able to be there for Amelia during the first three months of her life.

But now, she’s home.

She’s making adaptations. She’s learning new ways to do things. And, most importantly, she’s getting the chance to be a family again. 👩‍👧‍👦💕

After everything she has endured, Krysten’s story is not simply about what she lost.

It’s about the mother who survived, came home, and is now determined to make up for every moment she missed with her children.
