💔🕊️ She Was Supposed to Start Her Junior Year — Instead, a Texas School Community Is Mourning 16-Year-Old Ava

This week should have marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for 16-year-old Ava Wetzel.

She was supposed to walk through the doors of La Vernia High School in Texas, reunite with classmates, see familiar teachers, and begin her junior year.

Instead, her classmates returned to school without her.

As students arrived for the first day, the La Vernia Independent School District shared a message acknowledging the profound sadness affecting the community.

“As we welcome students back for the first day of school, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”

School officials said counselors were available on campus to support students and staff as they grieve Ava’s loss. Additional support from neighboring school districts was also available if needed.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Ava was involved in a rollover crash early Sunday morning on U.S. 87 in La Vernia.

She was just 16 years old.

For her family, the loss has brought unimaginable heartbreak.

Ava’s mother, Raquel, shared a short message filled with the kind of love only a mother can express.

“I love you & miss you terribly, my sweet Ava. My baby girl.”

Those few words reveal the enormous space Ava leaves behind. 💔

Her aunt also shared an emotional tribute, remembering Ava as the little girl she once held in her arms.

“How did we go from holding this sweet, chunky baby girl in our arms to laying a beautiful young lady to rest? This happened far too soon.”

Friends remembered Ava as a spirited young woman who brought energy, laughter, and joy wherever she went. Her presence made an impression on those around her, and now her school community is left to remember the moments they shared with her.

Instead of preparing for football games, school activities, classes, and another year of growing up, Ava’s family is now preparing to honor her life.

For her classmates and teachers, walking into school without her will undoubtedly make the familiar hallways feel different.

The district’s decision to provide counseling reflects the emotional weight this loss carries throughout the small Texas community.
