For most parents, a kiss on a child’s cheek is one of the simplest expressions of love. 💕👶

But for little Juwan Saaiman, an ordinary moment of affection was followed by a medical emergency that would permanently change his life.

At around 16 months old, Juwan’s left eye suddenly became red and irritated.

At first, his mother, Michelle, believed it was simply a routine eye infection.

She took him to seek medical help.

Doctors prescribed antibiotics.

But instead of getting better, Juwan’s condition rapidly became worse. 💔🏥

😢 WHAT LOOKED LIKE A SIMPLE EYE INFECTION BECAME SOMETHING MUCH MORE SERIOUS
Within days, Juwan’s family noticed what appeared to be something growing on his eye.

Even more frighteningly, the toddler showed very little reaction when he touched or scratched the affected area.

His family soon realized that something was seriously wrong. 💔

Specialists eventually diagnosed Juwan with an eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), a condition known as herpetic keraтιтis. 🦠👁️

HSV is commonly ᴀssociated with cold sores around the mouth.

But when the virus reaches the eye, it can cause serious damage to the cornea — the clear front surface that plays an essential role in vision.

And that is exactly what happened to Juwan. 😢

👁️ HIS CORNEA SUFFERED SEVERE DAMAGE
The infection caused extensive damage to Juwan’s cornea.

His eye became extremely dry after the protective tear film and nerve function were disrupted.

Then, a roughly four-millimeter opening developed on the surface of his cornea. 🏥💔

Doctors were now fighting to protect the eye itself.

Although the infection was eventually brought under control, the damage had already been devastating.

Juwan lost both vision and sensation in his left eye. ❤️‍🩹

For his family, the realization was heartbreaking.

Their little boy had gone from what seemed like a minor infection to permanent vision loss in a matter of days. 💔👶

🦠 HOW COULD A CHILD CATCH HSV?
Both of Juwan’s parents tested negative for the virus.

Doctors concluded that the most likely explanation was contact with someone carrying an active cold sore — potentially through a kiss near his eye or through contact with the person’s hand before Juwan touched his face. 🦠💋

No one could have imagined that an innocent moment of affection might lead to such serious consequences.

And that’s what makes Juwan’s story so heartbreaking.

Nobody intended to hurt him.

Nobody expected a simple kiss or close contact to become ᴀssociated with a devastating eye infection. 💔

🏥 HIS FAMILY TRAVELED FOR SPECIALIST CARE
Determined to protect their son’s eye and give him every possible chance to heal, Juwan’s family traveled from Namibia to Cape Town, South Africa, to seek specialist treatment. ✈️🏥

He underwent an amniotic membrane graft, a procedure used to help support healing of the damaged surface of the eye.

His eyelids were also temporarily sтιтched closed to give the injured eye time to recover. ❤️‍🩹👁️

For a young child, these procedures were an enormous challenge.

But his family continued searching for every possible option.

🙏 THEY ARE STILL HOPING FOR A BETTER FUTURE
Doctors have discussed additional procedures that could potentially help preserve Juwan’s eye and restore some function.

These include a possible nerve transfer from his leg to the eye and a future corneal transplant.

Whether meaningful vision can eventually return remains uncertain. 🙏💙

For now, his family can only continue taking things one step at a time.

Holding onto hope.

Following medical advice.

And doing everything possible to give their little boy the best future they can. ❤️‍🩹

💔 A CHILDHOOD CHANGED BY SOMETHING SO SMALL
Juwan was only a toddler.

At that age, children are discovering everything around them.

They recognize their parents’ faces.

They reach for toys.

They explore their surroundings.

They learn by watching, touching and seeing the world around them. 👶🌈

Losing sight in one eye so early in life is an enormous change.

But children can also be remarkably adaptable.

Juwan’s injury does not have to define the rest of his childhood.

He is still a little boy who can learn, play, laugh, grow and discover the world in his own way. 💙

⚠️ HIS MOTHER NOW WANTS OTHER PARENTS TO KNOW
Michelle has shared Juwan’s story publicly in the hope that other families will become more aware of the potential dangers of HSV in young children.

Her message is simple:

Cold sores are highly contagious, and people should avoid kissing babies and toddlers — especially when they have an active cold sore or symptoms of one. ⚠️🦠👶

This doesn’t mean parents should live in fear of affection.

It simply means that when someone has an active cold sore, taking a few extra precautions can be important.

Because with very young children, prevention can sometimes make an enormous difference. ❤️‍🩹
