🏈💔 HE WAS READY FOR ANOTHER FRIDAY NIGHT UNDER THE LIGHTS — THEN ONE FREAK PLAY CHANGED HIS LIFE

For high school football players, Friday nights are about the lights, the crowd, the adrenaline and the chance to compete alongside the teammates they have worked with for months.

For 18-year-old Traie Brown, this Friday night will be very different.

Instead of putting on his pads and running onto the field for Verbena High School, Traie will sit in the press box and watch his teammates play against Zion Chapel.

Just days ago, he was preparing for another football practice.

Now, he is preparing for a completely different kind of fight.

Traie, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs around 230 pounds, has been a powerful presence on the Verbena football team, playing both fullback and linebacker. He is the kind of athlete who never seemed afraid of contact.

Then came a freak accident at practice.

Traie jumped into the air while going after the football. When he came back down, he landed awkwardly, and another teammate landed on top of him.

In an instant, everything changed.

Traie suffered a shattered femur and severe damage to his knee. According to his father, DeWayne, he tore his ACL, MCL, PCL and LCL. He also suffered a torn hamstring, a torn bicep and drop foot, leaving him unable to properly lift his feet.

The injuries were devastating.

“Doctors have told Traie he will never be able to take part in any sport again,” his father said.

“My son’s athletic career is over.”

Traie is scheduled to undergo knee reconstruction surgery on September 18. His recovery is expected to be long and difficult, and his family knows there will be many challenges ahead.

The goal now is no longer returning to the football field.

It is getting Traie healthy, strong and independent enough to walk and live his life without the sport that has meant so much to him.

And that may be one of the hardest adjustments imaginable for a young athlete.

Tonight, he will have a front-row view of the game he loves — just from a very different seat.

Before the game, someone asked Traie how he was feeling.

His response was barely above a whisper:

“Oh, I’m OK.”

Maybe he meant it.

Maybe he was simply trying to stay strong.

Either way, there is no question that Traie has a long road ahead.

Football may have been taken away from him in a heartbreaking moment, but it does not define everything he can become.
