🌿⚠️ HE WAS ONLY HELPING CLEAR THE YARD: 7-YEAR-OLD RAYDEN SURVIVES SEVERE REACTION AFTER CONTACT WITH POKEWEED

What began as an ordinary afternoon helping his family clear an overgrown yard quickly became a frightening medical emergency for 7-year-old Rayden Vollrath of Pike County, Illinois.

Rayden was working alongside his father and soon-to-be stepmother when he pulled up a pokeweed plant growing on their property.

Pokeweed, scientifically known as Phytolacca americana, is a toxic plant commonly found across much of the United States. It can grow along fences, roadsides, fields and other areas where vegetation has become overgrown.

According to Rayden’s mother, Danielle Carnicelli, a milky substance from the plant’s stalk got onto her son’s hands. At some point afterward, Rayden scratched his face.

Soon, his face and arms began swelling.

He also experienced a burning sensation in his chest and difficulty breathing.

“It hurt. A lot. My chest was burning and I couldn’t breathe,” Rayden later recalled.

His symptoms became severe, and he was hospitalized after experiencing anaphylactic shock.

As her son received medical care, Carnicelli turned to friends, family and the community for prayers.

“I need all my prayer warriors,” she wrote while explaining what had happened.

Despite the frightening situation, she said Rayden remained in good spirits. At one point, however, his swelling appeared to be returning, adding to the family’s concern.

Doctors continued monitoring him, and Rayden ultimately spent approximately 24 hours in the hospital.

Thankfully, his condition improved enough for him to return home.

“24 hours later we are being released with an EpiPen [and] 8 different medications to help the symptoms,” Carnicelli shared.

Most of Rayden’s swelling had subsided by the time he was discharged, although his skin remained extremely dry following the severe swelling. His family was instructed to continue rotating medications during the first day at home.

Carnicelli later expressed graтιтude for her son’s recovery and for everyone who offered prayers and support.

“Rayden is a spit fire and with all glory to God himself for this recovery,” she wrote.

The experience has also prompted the family to warn other parents and pet owners about pokeweed.

The plant can be particularly concerning because its dark purple berries may attract children who could mistake them for something safe to eat. While serious poisoning is generally ᴀssociated with consuming the plant, contact can also cause skin irritation, and Rayden experienced an unusually severe allergic reaction.

For families, the incident serves as an important reminder to be cautious when clearing unfamiliar vegetation.

A plant growing quietly along a fence or in an overgrown corner of a yard may not always be harmless.

Parents and pet owners are encouraged to learn to recognize potentially toxic plants and keep children and animals away from them.

Rayden’s frightening experience ended with a much happier outcome: he was home with his family, continuing his recovery and surrounded by people grateful to see him doing better. ❤️‍🩹

His story is now helping spread awareness about a plant many families may unknowingly encounter.
