When Sadie Rutenberg was born, her parents entered a journey filled with uncertainty, courage, and hope.

Born on November 11 in Seattle, Washington, Sadie was diagnosed with complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC), a rare congenital heart condition that affects approximately two out of every 10,000 babies in the United States.

The condition left a large opening in the center of her heart, allowing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix and making it difficult for her body to receive the oxygen it needed. 💔

From the very beginning, her future was uncertain.

Despite undergoing two major surgeries, doctors were unable to fully correct the problem.

As her condition became increasingly critical, Sadie’s parents, Lee’or and Wendy, were told that one extraordinary option remained.

It was a tiny heart valve that had never before been implanted in a child and had not yet received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The decision carried both hope and uncertainty.

But for Sadie, it also represented the possibility of a future. ❤️

When she was just six months old, Sadie underwent her third open-heart surgery.

Her surgeon introduced the family to an innovative clinical trial involving the Abbott Masters 15 mm heart valve—the smallest heart valve of its kind ever developed for babies and infants.

“She was going to be the first child in this trial to receive it,” her father, Lee’or, recalled.

“That was both exciting and overwhelming because it could make all the difference for our daughter’s future.”

As Sadie was taken into the operating room, her parents faced one of the longest waits of their lives.

They worried whether the tiny valve would fit.

Whether it would work.

Whether this groundbreaking procedure would truly give their daughter another chance.

“There are moments when you can hardly breathe because you don’t know what comes next,” Lee’or said.

“Then Dr. Chen told us everything had worked, and we finally let out the biggest sigh of relief.” 🙏

That moment changed everything.

Following the surgery, Sadie remained in the hospital for another two months as she continued recovering.

Over the course of her medical journey, she underwent five open-heart surgeries and also received a pacemaker to help regulate her heartbeat.

Today, nearly three years after that groundbreaking surgery, Sadie is thriving.

“If you looked at Sadie, you would never believe everything she’s been through,” Lee’or told People.

“She’s this vibrant, playful, energetic little girl. She has more energy than I do.”

Her days are now filled with the simple adventures every child deserves.

She loves going to the playground.

She enjoys visiting the zoo.

And she happily watches Patriots football with her dad.

“She can’t get enough of life,” Lee’or shared.

“She’s never let any of this hold her back. She’s just the sweetest and happiest little girl.” 🌈

Looking back on those first difficult months, her father remembers waking each morning wondering what news the day might bring.

“Every single day during that first year, I wondered whether that would be the day we’d receive heartbreaking news,” he said.

“There were no guarantees.”
