What started as an attempt to recreate a popular social media experiment quickly turned into a frightening accident for 12-year-old Caden Ballard of Texas.

On August 16, Caden was at home in Coleman, Texas, with his older brother when they decided to imitate a video they had seen online. The experiment involved placing rubbing alcohol inside a bottle and lighting it to watch the flames rise.

At first, everything appeared harmless.

The brothers believed the flame had gone out, unaware that isopropyl alcohol can burn with an almost invisible flame, making it difficult to tell whether the fire is still active.

“It looked like the fire was out,” Caden recalled. “My brother told me to throw it away. When I picked it up, I suddenly realized my shirt had caught fire.”

Within seconds, the situation became a medical emergency.

Caden’s mother, Christina, was elsewhere on the property when the accident occurred. She rushed toward the house after a family friend heard the boys calling 911.

“When I reached the porch, his face, chest, arms, and stomach had severe burn injuries,” Christina said. “It was devastating to see.”

She explained that the accident came as a complete surprise because her sons typically watched harmless storytelling videos online.

Now, Christina hopes their family’s experience will encourage parents to remind children that not every online trend is safe to copy, no matter how harmless it may appear.

One reason Caden’s injuries were not even more severe was the quick thinking of his older brother.

Without hesitation, he pulled the burning shirt off Caden and instructed him to stop, drop, and roll, helping extinguish the flames before they spread further.

“I don’t know how you found the courage to reach into the flames and pull your brother’s shirt off,” Christina later told her son. “I thank God every single day that you did.”

Although the injuries were serious, Christina remains grateful.

“We were incredibly fortunate,” she said. “It was still a very serious accident, but we’re thankful it wasn’t even worse.”

Caden suffered second- and third-degree burns across approximately 11% of his body and was initially treated in Dallas before being transferred to Shriners Pediatric Burn Hospital in Galveston for specialized care.

Following surgery, he was eventually discharged and continues his recovery through outpatient treatment.

Doctors expect Caden may experience some permanent scarring. To help improve healing, he will wear specially designed compression garments, including gloves and shirts, to reduce the formation of thick scar tissue.

Because scar tissue doesn’t grow the same way as healthy skin, his medical team will continue monitoring him as he grows. Future reconstructive procedures may also be necessary.

A fundraising campaign created to help cover Caden’s medical expenses has already received support from many people wishing him a full recovery.

“Please continue keeping Caden in your thoughts,” Christina wrote. “This will be a long healing journey, but we’re grateful for every step forward.” 💙🙏
