A former reality television champion has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in the death of her three-year-old foster daughter, bringing a heartbreaking case that drew national attention to a close.

Ariel Robinson, winner of Season 20 of Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America, was found guilty of homicide by child abuse in connection with the death of Victoria “Tori” Smith, a three-year-old girl who had been placed in the family’s foster care.

The tragedy unfolded in Simpsonville, South Carolina, on January 14, 2021.

Emergency responders were called to the Robinson family home after Victoria was found unresponsive. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, she could not be saved. 💔

Investigators later determined that the little girl had suffered multiple blunt-force injuries that proved fatal.

Both Ariel Robinson and her husband, Jerry “Austin” Robinson, were arrested and charged in connection with Victoria’s death.

During the Greenville County trial in May 2022, prosecutors argued that Ariel Robinson was responsible for inflicting the fatal injuries.

Robinson testified in her own defense, denying responsibility.

She told jurors she had left the home the previous evening to run errands and returned the following morning, claiming Victoria suddenly became unresponsive after breakfast. Robinson suggested that her husband was responsible for what had happened.

After approximately 90 minutes of deliberation, the jury rejected her account and returned a guilty verdict on the charge of homicide by child abuse.

At sentencing, Judge Leтιтia H. Verdin described the evidence as among the most disturbing she had encountered during her years on the bench.

The judge said she had never seen injuries of such severity in more than a decade as a judge and questioned why medical ᴀssistance had not been sought sooner while the child was critically injured.

Based on the evidence presented during the trial, she concluded that life imprisonment was the only appropriate sentence. ⚖️

Earlier in the case, Jerry Austin Robinson pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting homicide by child abuse.

As part of a cooperation agreement with prosecutors, he testified against his wife and was later sentenced to 20 years in prison, receiving credit for time already served.

The case received widespread public attention because of Ariel Robinson’s appearance on national television.

She had won the 2020 season of Worst Cooks in America, a Food Network compeтιтion in which amateur cooks receive professional culinary training.

After the criminal charges became public, Food Network removed the entire season featuring Robinson from its platforms.

Victoria, lovingly known as Tori, was only three years old.

Her death prompted renewed discussion about the challenges of protecting vulnerable children within the foster care system and ensuring that children placed in temporary homes receive the care and safety they deserve.

While the legal proceedings have concluded, the loss of a young child continues to leave a lasting impact on everyone touched by the case.
