Bride on Emergency Flight Home After Honeymoon Nightmare in Japan
Sarah Danh, a 27-year-old labor and delivery nurse from Texas, is currently undergoing emergency medical transport back to the United States following a sudden and severe medical crisis that occurred during her honeymoon in Japan.
She was married on March 21 in what her family described as a joyful celebration marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. However, only weeks later, her condition changed dramatically. On April 9, just two days into her honeymoon, she developed acute liver failure with no prior known health issues reported before the trip.
The onset of symptoms was rapid and severe. According to reports, she experienced jaundice, vomiting, fever, and neurological complications associated with liver dysfunction, including brain pressure. The sudden nature of her decline required immediate intensive medical intervention.
At present, Sarah is being transported on a medically equipped flight coordinated between HCA Healthcare, Methodist Hospital Stone Oak, and AirMed. Her husband, Luke Gradl, 28, is accompanying her during the flight back to Texas, where she is expected to arrive in San Antonio.
Her employer, Methodist Hospital Stone Oak, played a key role in facilitating the emergency transfer, reflecting the urgency and complexity of her condition. Sarah works within the labor and delivery unit at the hospital, and her colleagues and institution have been actively involved in supporting her care.
Her mother, Le Le, initially traveled to Japan to provide support during the early stages of the crisis and has since returned to the United States separately.
The family has expressed deep gratitude for the coordinated efforts that made the medical evacuation possible. In a statement shared with People, they thanked HCA Healthcare, Methodist Hospital, and AirMed for their assistance, describing the support as invaluable during an extremely difficult time.
Public response has also been significant. A GoFundMe campaign established to support Sarah’s medical needs has raised more than $167,000, reflecting widespread community and online support. Messages of encouragement, prayer, and solidarity have been shared by both friends and strangers.
Despite extensive medical evaluation, the exact cause of Sarah’s sudden liver failure has not yet been determined. Her condition remains serious but stable as she continues to receive specialized care during transport and is expected to undergo further treatment upon arrival in Texas.
The contrast between the timing of her illness and her recent wedding has added emotional weight to the situation. What began as a honeymoon marking the start of married life has instead become a critical medical emergency requiring international coordination and urgent care.
As the flight continues across the Pacific, Sarah’s situation remains closely monitored by medical professionals. Her family remains hopeful while acknowledging the uncertainty ahead.
For now, the focus remains on stabilization, safe arrival, and the next stage of treatment — as a newlywed couple faces an unexpected and life-altering challenge far from home.
