At 68, Nigerian Woman Welcomes Twins After Decades of Waiting

In Lagos, Nigeria, an extraordinary story of perseverance and hope has captured attention worldwide. At the age of 68, Margaret Adenuga has given birth to twins after nearly five decades of longing for a child.

Margaret and her husband, Noah Adenuga, now 77, were married in 1974. From the beginning of their marriage, they dreamed of starting a family, but years turned into decades without success. Despite repeated disappointment, failed attempts, and emotional hardship, the couple remained devoted to one another and continued to hold onto hope that one day they would become parents.

After 46 years of waiting, they turned to in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a final option. The journey was not easy. Their first three IVF attempts were unsuccessful, bringing emotional and physical strain. Still, they refused to give up.

With encouragement from Noah, Margaret decided to try once more. He remained by her side throughout the process, offering reassurance and strength during moments of doubt. According to him, faith and persistence were key to continuing their journey.

During the fourth IVF cycle, the couple received life-changing news: Margaret had conceived. Even more surprisingly, she was expecting twins.

The pregnancy was considered extremely high-risk due to her age. Medical experts carefully monitored her condition throughout, understanding the potential complications associated with late-life pregnancies, especially multiple births.

Dr. Adeyemi Okunowo, the specialist overseeing her care, explained that the case required continuous supervision and advanced medical attention. He noted that pregnancies at such an advanced age are rare and carry significant risks, including premature delivery and health complications for both mother and babies.

Despite these challenges, Margaret carried the pregnancy successfully to term. Both she and her twins were reported to be in good health following delivery.

The moment marked the end of a 46-year journey filled with hope, heartbreak, and unwavering determination. For Noah, finally holding his children was an emotional and almost surreal experience.

“After all these years, finally holding our babies is indescribable,” he said. “They are the greatest blessing in our lives.”
