At 22, Single, and Child-Free — Then Triplets Changed Everything
At just 22 years old, Bethany Harris from Milton Keynes was living a life she felt completely in control of. She worked in hospitality, enjoyed her independence, and had no plans to become a mother — especially not in the near future. In fact, she often said she was happy being an aunt, spending time with her nieces and nephews without any desire for children of her own.
That all changed unexpectedly in December 2021.
Bethany became pregnant with her then-partner Craig, a relationship that was still relatively new and not fully established. Starting a family was never part of their plan. But at seven weeks pregnant, she attended a private scan alone, expecting a routine check-up. Instead, she received life-altering news: she was expecting twins.
Before she could process the shock, the sonographer discovered something even more unexpected — a third baby.
Bethany recalls freezing in disbelief, overwhelmed and alone in the moment. She immediately texted her mother: “It’s THREE!” Her mother initially thought it was a joke, only fully understanding after seeing the scan images herself.
The news was equally overwhelming for Craig. The couple had never lived together, and although they initially tried to make their relationship work, they eventually separated. However, they committed to co-parenting their children.
Despite the high-risk nature of a triplet pregnancy — especially with two babies sharing a sac — Bethany’s pregnancy remained relatively stable. She required a short hospital stay at 26 weeks due to pressure issues, but overall, the babies developed well under regular monitoring.
At 34 weeks and two days, Bethany delivered her triplets via planned caesarean section. The birth was remarkably fast, with all three babies arriving within four minutes. Athena was born first, followed by Hope and then CJ. Each weighed just over 4 pounds.
After delivery, Bethany needed a blood transfusion due to low iron levels. The girls required oxygen for a day, while CJ spent a week in intensive care with breathing difficulties and jaundice. Despite these early challenges, all three were home within three weeks.
Doctors had previously discussed the option of reducing the pregnancy due to medical risks, but Bethany refused. She said she could not imagine choosing between her babies and wanted all three to have a chance at life.
Adjusting to motherhood was initially daunting, but Bethany quickly adapted. With strong support from her family, she developed a structured routine that made caring for triplets more manageable than expected. Early on, all three babies often slept in the same crib, which helped them settle more easily.
Feeding three newborns was one of the biggest challenges. After a brief attempt at breastfeeding, she switched to formula and used a special feeding pillow designed for multiple babies, allowing her to feed all three at once.
By six months, the triplets were on solids and following a consistent routine, eventually sleeping through the night from around 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Daily life remains demanding, involving constant organisation, around 24 nappies a day, and careful financial planning. Simple tasks like going out require significant preparation.
Yet Bethany describes her life as unexpectedly fulfilling. Supported by family and co-parenting with Craig, she has built a stable environment for her children.
“I just told myself I’d figure it out,” she says. And she did.
Now, as her triplets approach their first birthday, Bethany reflects on how dramatically her life has changed in just a short time. From a young woman with no plans for children to a mother of three, she says she cannot imagine her life any other way.
