27 Months of Silence: A Return That Meant More Than Survival

27 Months of Silence: A Return That Meant More Than Survival
There are stories that are difficult to hear…
and even harder to fully understand.
Roman Horilyk’s story is one of them.
Before everything changed, he lived a normal life. Strong, healthy, nearly 100 kilograms — a man with a future that seemed steady and certain.
Then, in March 2022, he was captured.
And disappeared.
What followed was not just time in captivity.
It was a fight to survive in conditions where time seemed to lose meaning, and where even the most basic human needs — food, care, dignity — were no longer guaranteed. 💔
Days turned into months.
Months turned into years.
Over 27 months, his body endured what few could imagine. Starvation reduced him to nearly half his weight. Strength faded. Health declined. The man he once was slowly disappeared — replaced by someone barely recognizable, a shadow shaped by survival.
When images of him later surfaced, they shocked many. But not because they were unusual — rather, because they revealed a reality that often remains unseen.
And yet… his story did not end there.
In May 2024, during a prisoner exchange, his name was finally called.
Even then, there was no certainty.
Hands tied. Eyes covered. Moved from one place to another, unsure if this moment would bring freedom — or something else entirely. Hope, after so long, had become fragile. Something difficult to trust.
Until the moment everything changed.
The plane landed.
And suddenly… it was real.
People were waiting.
There was water.
There were small gestures — simple things that carried a meaning far greater than words.
Because after everything he had endured, it wasn’t grand moments that mattered most.
It was being seen again.
Being remembered.
Being home. 🤍
Recovery did not happen overnight.
Slowly, his body began to regain strength. Weight returned. Energy came back. Today, he stands stronger again — not just physically, but in a way that goes far beyond the surface.
And then came a decision that surprised many.
He wants to return.
Not because he is forced to.
But because he chooses to.
He calls the day he came back his “second birthday.”
