“ALONE IN THE ER, BUT NOT IN SPIRIT: THE FIGHT OF A 19-YEAR-OLD STUDENT AGAINST LEUKEMIA”

On March 5, 2026, Shreya Bhatta, a 19-year-old Nepali student studying at Texas State University, arrived at the emergency room alone. What began as an urgent hospital visit quickly turned into a life-altering moment that no young person ever imagines facing.

Doctors delivered a devastating diagnosis: Acute Leukemia.

In an instant, her world shifted from classes, friends, and campus life to hospital rooms, medical charts, and uncertainty. With no immediate family physically present nearby, Shreya found herself confronting this reality largely on her own in a foreign country.

Despite the shock and fear, she began treatment right away. Chemotherapy became her new routine — a fight not measured in exams or deadlines, but in blood counts, hospital stays, and recovery windows.

Her body has since gone through serious strain. Complications from treatment, including dangerously low blood counts, have kept her hospitalized and under close monitoring. In this fragile state, even simple days can become battles of endurance.

Still, she continues to push forward.

Once her condition stabilizes, chemotherapy is expected to resume as part of a long treatment plan. Doctors estimate her full recovery could take one to two years — a long road filled with uncertainty, resilience, and hope.

But even in isolation, Shreya’s story is not only about illness. It is about courage under pressure, about a young woman navigating one of life’s hardest chapters far from home, and about the quiet strength it takes to keep going when everything feels overwhelming.

Her journey is still unfolding — one day at a time. 💫
