💔 SHE TOOK 40+ BITES TO SAVE A BABY — THE MOM WHO STOOD BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH
When Felicia Hambrick agreed to babysit her best friend Cassy’s three children while Cassy and her husband went away for their anniversary, it was supposed to be a quiet day. It wasn’t. Cassy’s family dog, a pit bull named Roscoe, had been locked in the bedroom. Without warning, he broke free and charged directly at Hambrick, who was holding Cassy’s 8-month-old baby at the time. In that split second, Felicia made a choice — she threw herself between the dog and the infant, cushioning the baby as she fell to the ground, and then kept her own body as a shield as Roscoe tore into her again and again. She took more than 40 bites. She never let the baby go.
Cassy’s mother, who had stepped outside, returned to find Roscoe in a frenzy. She beat the dog back with a broom, suffering bites on her own arms before finally getting him outside. Firefighters arrived and rushed Felicia to the hospital with severe injuries. The baby was completely unharmed. From her hospital bed, Felicia said she knew the dog wasn’t after the child. “I knew he didn’t want her,” she said.
“He was coming after me.” So she made sure he got her instead. Cassy has been unable to forgive herself. “There’s nothing that Felicia can say or anybody can do that’s going to make me feel not guilty,” she said. “She’s my best friend. Because of me, her life is forever changed.” But she also knows what her friend’s courage meant. “If the dog had gotten to my baby in any way, she could have died. I’m so thankful that Felicia took that on herself instead of my baby.” Roscoe has since been euthanized. Felicia Hambrick survived. And because of her, so did that little girl.
