Havana — Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of Cuba, has called for urgent changes to the country’s economic model, warning that current conditions require immediate and decisive action.

Speaking at a recent government session, Díaz-Canel emphasized the need to modernize Cuba’s economic structure, improve productivity, and address ongoing challenges such as inflation, shortages, and declining purchasing power.

Cuba’s economy has faced mounting pressure in recent years due to a combination of internal inefficiencies and external factors, including long-standing sanctions and global economic instability. The president stressed that reforms must focus on boosting domestic production, supporting small businesses, and increasing efficiency in state enterprises.

“We must act with urgency and creativity,” Díaz-Canel stated, highlighting the importance of adapting to new economic realities while maintaining the country’s social principles.

Analysts say the call reflects growing recognition within Cuba’s leadership that incremental changes may no longer be sufficient, and that broader reforms could be necessary to stabilize the economy.

However, the scope and pace of these changes remain uncertain, as the government seeks to balance reform with political and social priorities.
