Doha / London — A British RAF fighter jet has shot down an Iranian drone heading toward Qatari airspace, in a dramatic mid-air interception that has blown the lid off the UK’s previously “limited” role in the widening Gulf crisis.

According to defense sources, the RAF jet — scrambled from a coalition base in the region — locked onto the unmanned aircraft after it was tracked flying along a corridor used by Western military and commercial traffic. After repeated radio warnings and verification from surveillance assets, the British pilot fired an air-to-air missile, destroying the drone over international waters before it could approach Qatari territory.

In London, the Ministry of Defence confirmed the engagement, saying UK forces had acted “in collective self-defence” to protect “allied assets and regional stability.” The statement marks the clearest admission yet that Britain is now an active combat participant in operations aimed at blunting Iranian strikes and drone incursions.

Tehran has condemned the shootdown as “unprovoked aggression,” insisting the drone was on a “reconnaissance mission” and warning that the UK has “placed itself on the front line of consequences.” Analysts say the incident is a turning point: by pulling the trigger on an Iranian asset bound for Qatar, the RAF hasn’t just defended an ally — it has signalled that Europe’s most capable air power is now firmly, and visibly, in the fight.
