Clinton Criticizes House Oversight Committee After Contentious Deposition

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton excoriated members of the House Oversight Committee Thursday, accusing them of performing “partisan political theater” by subpoenaing her for fruitless testimony about her association with deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his convicted madam Ghislaine Maxwell.

The closed-door deposition at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center stretched for more than six hours — but was derailed briefly when Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) improperly leaked a photo of Clinton from inside the hearing room to a conservative influencer who posted it on X.

“I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of people who had contact with him before his criminal plea in ’08 were like most people: They did not know what he was doing,” Clinton told reporters following the deposition.

“And I think that that is exactly what my husband will testify to.”

In her opening statement, the former first lady called the Oversight Committee’s Epstein investigation an “abdication of duty and an insult to the American people” — before suggesting alternative lines of inquiry for the GOP-led panel.

That included pressing the committee to dig deep into President Trump’s ties to the deceased Epstein, while also ripping Republicans for engaging in a probe designed “to protect one political party.”

“You have compelled me to testify, fully aware that I have no knowledge that would assist your investigation, in order to distract attention from President Trump’s actions and to cover them up despite legitimate calls for answers,” Clinton, the 2016 political rival of Trump, said.

Trump and Epstein were friends for years, but had a falling out before the disgraced financier was indicted for soliciting prostitution in 2006. Trump has denied any connection to Epstein’s sex crimes and claims he kicked him out of Mar-a-Lago for bad behavior with young women.

Clinton also urged a subpoena of billionaire Elon Musk, citing the former DOGE leader and tech mogul’s emails with the financier from more than a decade ago — and answered for the first time why her daughter Chelsea hosted Maxwell at her 2010 wedding.

“She came as the plus-one, the guest of someone who was invited,” the former secretary of state told reporters.

“There were a lot of questions we asked that we weren’t satisfied with what we got,” Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told reporters after the deposition.

“The number of times that she said, ‘I don’t know you’ll have to ask my husband,’ was more than a dozen,” Comer noted. Bill Clinton’s deposition will take place at the same location on Friday.

“One of the things I learned today is if you really have specific questions about the Clinton Global Initiative or the relationship between the Clintons and Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell — you gotta ask Bill Clinton,” added Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.).

After her lapse in protocol, Boebert also was happy to dodge questions by citing past Clinton scandals.

“I just returned to my hotel room and installed the BleachBit software,” Boebert later told reporters, in a reference to the program used to delete emails from Clinton’s private server in 2015 that thwarted an FBI investigation into the mishandling of classified information.

“I guess in regards to taking photos, I do not recall,” the firebrand Republican congresswoman joked.

Boebert also doubled down later in a reference to the 2012 Benghazi terror attack that took the lives four US citizens — including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

“No U.S. Ambassadors were harmed in the taking of today’s photo,” she posted on X, in a swipe at Clinton’s tenure in the State Department.

At the end of the deposition, Clinton mentioned that Republicans also grilled her “about UFOs and a series of questions about Pizzagate, one of the most vile, bogus conspiracy theories.”

“I’m not going to do it again,” she added of the ordeal. “They had a chance to do it in public.”

Clinton and Comer said a video and transcript will be produced as soon as possible.

Both Republicans and Democrats on the Oversight panel voted to subpoena Bill and Hillary Clinton last year — but the onetime Democratic powerbrokers narrowly evaded being held in contempt of Congress in January before agreeing to testify.

“The Committee justified its subpoena to me based on its assumption that I have information regarding the investigations into the criminal activities of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell,” Hillary Clinton’s prepared statement read.

“Let me be as clear as I can. I do not,” she added. “I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein. I never flew on his private plane or visited his island, homes or offices. I have nothing to add to that.”

Comer told reporters to expect “long” interviews with Hillary and Bill Clinton over the next two days, saying many members on both sides of the aisle have questions for the ex-first couple.

“We worked for six months to get the Clintons to come in,” Comer said. “No one’s accusing the Clintons of any wrongdoing, but we have a lot of questions.”

According to the chairman, those questions included: “How did [Epstein] accumulate so much wealth? How was he able to surround himself with some of the most powerful men in the world? Was he an asset for our government or any other government?”

Democrats on the panel emerged fewer than two hours after the questioning began to affirm that Hillary Clinton had fully cooperated and answered all questions put to her — but had “zero knowledge of any wrongdoing.”

“We should depose the person that is mentioned in the Epstein files almost more than any other person next to Ghislaine Maxwell — and that’s Donald Trump,” suggested ranking member Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.).

Other Oversight Democrats also renewed calls for the committee to subpoena Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who had denied interacting with Epstein beyond the mid-2000s — before emails in Justice Department disclosures proved otherwise.

Hillary Clinton arrived in a caravan of three black SUVs at the performing arts center a little before 11 a.m. before being ushered into the building through a secure, tented-off area.

Elsewhere in her statement, Clinton shared a list of questions that she believed lawmakers should be asking.

“A committee run by elected officials with a commitment to transparency would ensure the full release of the files,” her prepared remarks read.

“It would subpoena anyone who asked on which night there would be the ‘wildest party’ on Epstein’s island.”

The only time that phrase is used on the Department of Justice’s Epstein Library is in an email between tech mogul Musk and Epstein on Nov. 25, 2012.

“What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?” Musk asked Epstein in the email.

Other emails indicate that the Tesla and Space X founder never visited Little St. James, with Musk writing in a Jan. 2, 2013, email: “Logistics won’t work this time around.”

“I have never been to any Epstein parties ever and have many times [called] for the prosecution of those who have committed crimes with Epstein,” Musk has said.

“The acid test for justice is not the release of the files, but rather the prosecution of those who committed heinous crimes with Epstein.”
