The Dinosaur Rocks of Mukdahan: 95-Million-Year-Old Sandstone Sculpted by Time

In the quiet forests of Mukdahan Province, northeastern Thailand, strange rock formations rise from the ground like the backs of giant reptiles.

Known as the “Dinosaur Rocks” of Phu Pha Thoep National Park, these mᴀssive sandstone outcrops date back roughly 95 million years to the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. Over the millennia, relentless forces of wind, rain, and erosion sculpted the sandstone into shapes eerily reminiscent of enormous serpents, turtles, or crocodile scales.

.

From certain angles, the rocks resemble the heads of prehistoric creatures emerging from the jungle canopy, their cracked and patterned surfaces evoking the texture of reptilian skin. Locals long regarded these formations as sacred, believing they were once mythical beings turned to stone, while geologists marvel at the natural processes that created them.

Walking beneath their overhangs, one feels a strange blend of awe and humility: nature itself has been the artist, carving for millions of years until the rocks carry both scientific wonder and spiritual meaning, linking the ancient Earth to the imagination of today.
